The loss was against Ajax, a team that is proving to be a tough opponent as the S & G boys only losses have been against them. The manager of the Bowmanville Bowmanville team had suggested to the team that they would do well if they prevented the Oshawa team from scoring ten goals. However, the Selects played good, conservative conservative hockey and were full value for the tie. The OCHL Selects opened the scoring when Bowmanville left the net unprotected, allowing allowing the opponents an unobstructed unobstructed shot on goal. Steven Steven Bizi scored for Bowmanville Bowmanville in the third period after making a tremendous effort to get a shot away as 'he was checked on each side. Congratulations to the team for an excellent effort. After a busy Christmas the Hooked on Video Pee Wees were involved in the Bowmanville Christmas Classic Tournament. Playing their first game, against Port Hope. The game ended in a 5-5 tie, and this is how the scoring went. Bowmanville scored first when Chad Armstrong put the puck past the Port Hope goaltender. Latèr on that day the Pee Wees had to face another match against Kingston Township, where the fans saw the Toros down Kingston with an excellent performance. Kingston opened the scoring at the 8,: >0 mark of the first period. Only ' for the Toros- to come back'and , tie up . the game about a ' minute later, when Matthew Doughty scored unassisted. Kingston scored once more to end the first period with a 2-1 lead. The Toros knew they had to get down to some serious hockey in order to beat this team. Marty Burgess scored in the second period to tie the game at 2 with an assist going to Geoff Goode. Matthew Doughty scored his second of the night to take the lead for the first time in the game. He was fed an excellent pass from Ryan Putnam and sunk it behind Kingston's goal- tender. The second period ended with the Toros in a one goal lead. The third period was all Bowmanville seeing Matthew Doughty score a hattrick at the 9:03 mark. The team effort was fantastic with each member of the team' working hard enough to win the game 6-2. The last two goals were 30 seconds apart going to Jeff Flintoff and Ryan Putnam. Congratulations to the team for a game well played. After a night's rest the Toros were us against a team from the MTHL, Wet Mall Wolves. The game was rough and tough, but with the poor refereing done by you know who, the fans saw the home team penalized double to what the visitors were. However, the Toros played well under these circumstances. circumstances. All of the scoring was done in the first period with West Mall winning 3-1. The Wolves advanced to the finals where they lost to Cobourg. The Toros advanced to the "C" division where they faced Port Perry. If you thought the West Mall game was poorly refereed you should have seen this game. It was unreal, I am one who agrees on penalizing a team when they deserve it. But, I have never seen referees so against one team in all my life. I think these two uneducated referees should clean up their act or find themselves a job they can handle: This game was so out of hand the referees even had the fans on their backs. However, on with the game. In the first period Port Perry scored twice to take a 2-0 lead. Bowmanville got a goal with 50 seconds remaining in the second period, when Steven De Smedt fed a nice pass to David Szabo who made sure the puck went by the Port Perry goaltender. The third period Bowmanville played well but could not put the biscuit in the basket. Port Perry scored two more goals to win the "C" division championship. The Toro's were the "C" division finalists. Congratulations Toros. Battle for First and Second Place On Sat., Jan 10th Kool met Nichols in a battle of first and second place clubs in the House League Bantam Division. Both teams got off to a fast start when Richard MacCheyne scored following a nice play by Billy MacIntyre on the first shift of the game, then Nichols scored to tie the game on the second shift. From that point on Kool dominated the game, outshooting, outchecking and outscoring Nichols. Kool opened up a 6-1 lead on goals by Richard MacCheyne and Scott Selleck, Billy MacIntyre from Steve Bizi then Steve from Richard Smit and Scott and Steve's second unassisted and finally Andrew Day from Richard MacCheyne and Billy MacIntyre. Nichols narrowed the gap to 6-3 but Kool tightened up and played good defensive hockey in the third period to put the game away. The defence of Andrew Day, Chris Gordon, Bryan James and Steve Kay played a strong game in front of goaltender Dave Killens who made several fine saves during the game. Each forward line played well, forechecking, backchecking and setting up offensive plays. OUTCLASSES WHITBY On Fri. Jan. 9th, Darlington was the site of the first meeting of the year between Bantam teams from Bowmanville and Whitby and the game ended with a 5-2 victory for • Bowmanville. Steve Bizi got the evening's event off to a fast start by scoring 14 seconds into the game when his hard shot found the top corner of the net. Steve Kay assisted on this goal. Two and a half minutes later Scott Selleck scored when, he finished off a fine three-way play from Richard MacCheyne and Andrew Day. Kevin Jay scored Kool's third from Steve Bizi and Billy MacIntyre off a scramble in front of the Whitby net. In the second period, Richard MacCheyne finished Kool's scoring on the night by netting two on the same shift. His first was from Richad Smit and Scott Selleck while his second was from Richard and Andrew. Kool's close checking broke down briefly, allowing Whitby to close the gap to 5-2. Kool soon recovered and shut down the Whitby team. However, they were unlucky around the Whitby net where a great deal of the third period was played. Backed by the solid goaltending goaltending of Barry Roberts, the Flying Dutchman earned a 2-2 draw with -TJ's Roadhouse in Saturday's opener. Roberts kicked out all 27 TJ shots over 2 periods while Harold Leach and A1 Warren, on a Don Bracey giveaway, sent the Dutchman to the dressing room with a 2 goal lead. However, a sermon by, TJ leader Erik Strand during intermission, inspired the troops and his squad poured on the pressure during the opening minutes of the third, resulting in goals by Warren Alder and Strand to tie the score. Five goals within an 8 minute span during the final stanza lifted Courtice Auto to within 3 points of first place in the Oliver Division standings. Courtice outscored Hanc's, who led 3-2 at one point, and skated to a 7-4 win. Pete Henderson and A1 Junkin each scored twice for the winners while A1 Short recorded his fourth of the campaign for Hanc's. A six point performance including 3 goals by Doug Kool Even With McGregor On Sat., Jan 3rd, Kool and McGregor opened the second half of their season with a 2-2 tie. The game was a sluggish affair with Kool dominating territorially but unable to either finish their plays or beat the goaltender. Kool got off to a 1-0 lead when Steve Bizi knocked in a rebound following a shot from the point by Andrew Day. Kevin Jay also earned an assist on Steve's goal. Kool continued to be snake- bitten around our own goal when a long hot deflected off a defender's stick into our own net to tie the score. With the score 2-1 in favour of McGregors and less than two minutes remaining. Kool was finally able to beat Scott Hanthorn when Richard MacCheyne backhanded in Kool's second goal during a goal mouth scramble. Assisting on Richard's goal were Bryan James and Richard Smit. Victory Moves McGregor into Second Place On Saturday, January 10, MacGregor Hardware won a 4-2 victory over Square Boy Pizza to take a one point lead into second place of the Bantam division. They are to be highly commended commended as half the team has been struck by a virus which kept four boys off the ice and three others probably probably should have been off. Being short handed .the boys decided to play hard at the beginning of the game, putting in three goals in quick succession. One at 14:31 by Mark Peirce; one at 12:01 by Gilbert Holder and one at 9:03 by Jeff Acheson. There has been a notica- ble improvement in passing which accounts for the récent récent rise in success. The team in the last five games has won four and tied one. The second period was fast and hard hitting with only one goal by Mark Peirce and two team penalties. penalties. The third period saw only two penalties by the team: In the later part of the game as the boys were getting getting tired from double shifting shifting due to lack of replacements, replacements, the fresher Square Boys were able to get by and put in two goals. Scott Hanthorne, our goalie, despite being ill, played an outstanding game. Thanks Scott. Hang in there Shawn Connolly, Connolly, one of those pucks is going in that net yet. Watch out, little Shawn is getting lean, mean and tough. Keep up the passing and position play boys, you played a great game. Let's go all the way.
