Video Pee Wees Unable To Get Hold of Cobourg The Hooked on Video-Major Pee Wees (Toros) travelled to Cobourg on the 9th of Jan., 1987, for a league game against the .Cobourg team, whom the Toros have not defeated this season. The horrie team came out strong and scored two goals in 12 seconds, both due to miscues by Bowmanville, in the middle of the first period. There was no further scoring until early in the secônd, as the Toros went on the attack. Our No. 11, Dave "Zàmboni" Szabo scored from No. 12 Dana Barrett, Then Bowmanville tied the score at' 2- 2 as No. 6 Steve "Bam Bam" De Smedt scored from No. 5 Geoff Goode, Cobourg scored before the period ended for a 3- 2 lead. The Peterboro team seemed prepared and ready to play hockey and scored the only two goals in the first period. There was no scoring in the second as both teams had their chances, but both goaltenders came up with some excellent saves. Twenty-sevén seconds into the third, Peterboro scored to make it 3-0. It seemed to take the wind out of the Toro sails, but, with a little encouragement. encouragement. from the "crowd", coaches and players themself, themself, Bowmanville came back to score 5 goals in the last 6 minutes of the game. It was accomplished through a team effort, through positive thinking and a little luck. Starting the comeback, the team captain. No. 16 Jeff "Flinter" Flintoff from Dana Barrett. Then Dana Barrett/ scored to make the score 3-2 for Peterboro, from Geof/ Goode. Steve "Bam Bam" ! Smedt tied the score froh Geoff Goode and CWd "Army" Armstrong. When jana Barrett's penalty was ovjr, he stepped on the ice and w£ fed, a perfect pass from our No. 7, Chris Brown for a breakaway and scored, to take a lead for the first time in the game. The Toros got an insurance goal from No. 9, Ryan Putnam, with assist to Chad Armstrong and Jeff Flintoff; Bowmanville winning the game 5-3. It is this kind of effort and support, that has the makings of a good team. Both goal- tenders No. 1 Geoff Smith and No. 30 Jason Hiscock deserve honourable mention for their performance between the pipes - keep your chin up! Also No. 2 Ron "Rooster" Luxton and No. ^Martin D'Entremont anchoring the defence. Supplying the power up front No. 10 Marty "Magician" Burgess and No. 14 Matthew "Matty" doughty. The I.O.O.F. sponsored Pee Wee Selects have played three games so far in 1987. Although they ended up on the short end of the score in all three, the team continues to improve and give a good effort. On Jan. 5, the boys travelled to Oshawa to face the Oshawa Church Hockey League Selects and dropped a 5-0 decision. The opposition was still conducting try-outs and their play showed this as everyone was looking to make the team. Goaltender Darrin Higgon kept the score respectable with some timely saves, Jeff Pickle and Christian Forsey continued their steady play on defence and Dave Smith, playing his first game a center caused the most problems for the opposition. On Saturday, Jan. 10, the local boys hosted the Minor Selects from Newmarket at Newcastle. In a game that could have gone either way, the Bowmanville team was stopped cold by two red-hot goaltenders who combined for a 2-0 shutout. Kevin Farrow, Kent Vanderheyden and Ryan Recker were all seen shaking their heads at some of the saves. The I.O.O.F. lads were looking for revenge as they took to the ice at the Darlington Sorts Center on Friday Jan. 16 to face the Whitby Warriors Major Selects. Still smarting from their 8-0 thrashing in their previous encounter and knowing they play better on the larger ice surface, the I.O.O.F. Pee Wees would not be held off the score sheet this time. This was a fast-paced entertaining game that was tied 4-4 after 2 periods but ended 8-5 for the visitors. Leading the attack for the home side was Kevin Farrow with a goal and 2 assists while Jeff Martin and Kent . Vanderheyden chipped in with a goal and an assist each. Craig Forsey and Dave Smith added singles. Dave Rice, Darryl McKenzie, Ryan Becker and Mike Bradley earned one assist each. Goaltender Roger LeBlanc, filling in for injured netminder Darrin Higgin, was steady between the pipes, against a team that could ice three very good offensive lines. Next game is Jan. 23rd at. 8:00 p.m. in Orono. Durham Wood Win 2 Games by Bob Sheridan On Friday night last/ Durham Wood Products' came back from a three game losing streak. Bob De-' blois led our attack with three goals. Bob Sheridan scored two, with singles going to Hugh German and' Siegi Rohr. On Sunday morning we played Newcastle and defeated defeated them 5-1. Art Hester who had played a solid game on Friday night was almost flawless in this contest. contest. Dave Roote finally beat him with only three'mi- nutes left in the third period. David Green and Bob Hellam led our attack': with two goals each. Hugh German, one of our most capable and consistent performers performers both at forward and on defense, scored the fifth. goal. The other forwards, , Grant Flintoff, Bob Sheridan, Sheridan, Ron Rushak and Barry Oliver, played good positional positional hockey to frustrate the opposition. On defense, Grant Wright - and Warren Townsley were excellent. Thanks to Donny Smith and Ken Ashton from Heritage House, who capa-. bly augmented our defense corps for the Sunday morning morning contest. *UlCUiJl We would like to thank you for the best year ever in our company's history.
