On May 20, the Regional Council voted to locate the headquarters in Oshawa. However, the Region will reconsider that decision at its meeting today (Wednesday, (Wednesday, June 3). In a recent letter to local area councillors and regional regional officials, Mayor Pilkey Pilkey says that Oshawa's contributions contributions to the proposed headquarters are an investment investment in the future. He further stales that the present regional building at Rossland Road in Whitby will maintain its presence with expanded courthouse facilites and possibly a new Registry office in the im mediate vicinity. £ In November 1986, the. City of Oshawa proposed-; that it would abandon its*, legal claims (estimated by- thc city to be worth approx-:; imatcly $3.3 million) and 1 provide free land if the Re-; gion voted to locate the new 1 , headquarters in downtown; Oshawa. I In a report dated May 8,1 1987, senior regional staff; concluded that the Oshawaj, proposal was indeed the; best choice. The other op-, lions looked at included a- site across from the present" building, renovations or doing nothing at the mo; ment. j, The City Of Oshawa has- received a proposal to. develop the Regional Headi quarters in combination; with a major hotel and coni' fcrcncc/convcntion facility on the nine acre parcel of land downtown. i TO FIND THE RIGHT HOMES, JUST LOOK FOR THE SIGNS. ' Residents To Subdivision by Carolyn Hepburn A group of Courlice area residents told Newcastle's general purpose committee Monday that they object to a proposed residential subdivision subdivision at the corner of BloorSl. and Townline Rd. The development is on the southeast corner of Bloor Street and Townline Road. It involves the construction construction of 106 single family family dwellings and 54 multiple multiple family units on a 8.26 hectare block. The land is owned by Gatehouse Holdings Holdings Limited. "I don't want to be forced from my home," said R.R.4 Oshawa resident, Elsie Mayne. Mrs. Mayne has been a resident resident of the area for 21 years, and is involved in horse farming. "It is my way of life, my lifestyle," said Mrs. Mayne, as she brought her concerns to the general purpose committee committee meeting earlier this week. Another concerned Oshawa are/i resident, John Slemko, offered some different different reasons for not wanting wanting the development. He is concerned with the density of. the proposed housing and the to'wnhoiise complex. "I. think that if new properties properties in the immediate area are not in keeping with the present buildings, my building may decrease in value." said Mr. Slemko. He says that his home, valued valued at approximately $250,000, is on one acre of land. He estimates that the proposed development will have eight units per land. "I propose that the plan- ningcommittee have the applicant applicant lower the density of house population," said Mr. Slemko. This might ensure that the surrounding property values are not decreased, according to Mr. Slemko. ; Another concern raised-; by citizens at the general^. , committee meeting was the)-' lack of nearby schools andc the inadequate shopping*-. areas. "There arc no shops, no» schools. Where arc these£* chi|dren going to go?" saidV Mrs. Gillian Jurchison, a rc-ÿ sidenl of Downs Crescent in v Usliawa. "It saddens me," she said, "We like to see the coun-;' try, we can drive across the»* road and we're in the coun-*< try," she added. According to Mr. Slemko,»: the construction of the GM head office in Oshawa (near 1 -» the site of the proposed re-Li sidential development) willy; also have an effect on the'* area. "The land surrounding^ the office will be desirable \- to executive types," said Mr. Slemko. ■£ "A lot of people commute;* from Toronto and they are?; looking for substantial?; housing," he added. Mr. Slemko wants the Town of Newcastle to look'J at the density of the area,." keeping in mind all future-j; consequences of a residen-J; liai development like the." one proposed by Gatehouse Holdings Limited. <• Traffic is also of concern to area residents. y. "The access from the 401 V Highway won't carry the ex-£ cess to be created by this 1 ;, development," said George?' McNab, also of Down Cres-ij, cent. > "It is ridiculous to in-?' crease the loads on the Jo roads, the level train cross- ing already backs up traffic £ as it is," he added. y>; Councillor Cowman# agrees with the fears overS increased traffic. <S "As traffic from Courtice builds up it's going to be-5. cone a major concern," said Councillor Cowman. & HOUSE FOR SALE Blackstock Custom built, approx. 1200 sq. ft., two bedroom brick bungalow with main floor laundry, attached garage, plastered throughout, 14 years old, good level lot, 100 ft. x 150 ft.
