( I « Section Two The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanville, June 3, 1987 Wesleyville News E. Barrowclough No Wesleyville news went to the Statesman, while I was away in beautiful British Columbia for two weeks. The country side there was bright with yellow blooms and parks and private gardens were a riot of colour. I have not seen rhododendrons growing here but they should grow in Ontario for they are found growing wild at the altitude of Hope, B.C. Huge blooms of red, pink and mauve make a great show. A side trip just over the border in Washington state found a newly acquired family property covered with masses of tent caterpillars. Tall trees were covered to the top with webs and trunks of the large trees were a solid mass of worms. Evidently there are many in Ontario too. As always a trip by ferry to Victoria to visit friends there was a lovely part of the holiday. Reminders of Expo are to be seen in Vancouver and the amazing new bridge, the longest in the world of its design, stretches across buildings and streets and is the pride of the city. The season, as here, was much •advanced. A dog wood tree on the lawn of my host's house was completely covered with bloom when I arrived and they were all off at the end of the visit. There is great concern there about unemployment, one firm is urging workers to retire from age 57 on, and this will allow younger men, previously laid off to be rehired. Sincere sympathy to the family of Allan Brooking, a native of Wesleyville, whose sudden and early death shocked and saddened his family and friends. Sympathy also to Maurice O'Neill in the loss of his mother, Mrs. Mary O'Neill, and to other members of her family. Allan Holdaway was sorry to hear of the sudden death of his cousin R.K. Holdaway recently. R.K. was the son of Vice Holdaway, a native of Port Britain. He had retired recently to Brandon, Manitoba from Flin Flon where he had been employed by Hudson Bay Mining Co. In his motor home he drove with his wife and a sister to Fenelon Falls, Ontario to visit a sister there, and there suffered a severe heart attack. To prevent interference with wires, hydro has cut some huge old locust trees on the south end of this farm. They surrounded the spot where Nathan Walton built his lpg house in 1795 and later his manor house which was destroyed by fire some years after 1850. Hydro put the branches through a chipping machine and left the wood blocks for the property owner. Church service at Welcome on May 24th was conducted by Rev. W. Sedgwick. The theme for the service was "The Image of God", with the title, "One Road Leads Home". The children were asked if they had ever been told they looked like their father or mother and most them had. There are no pictures of God but Jesus Nyhl Sheehan, Hazel Stapleton. Special Draw Prizes to Marion McKeen, Lavera Clemens, Robin Alldred. BUSINESS DIRECTORY ACCOUNTANCY WILLIAM C. HALL B.Comm. That image is influenced very often by some incident in childhood. Some cannot accept the image of God as father because of an evil earthly parent but for 1 others, there is no difficulty for the father they know is all the world to them. As we grow older and our image develops, we accept that God is a spirit and the mystery of him no longer troubles us in our faith in his loving care. The choir's anthem was "Seek Ye the Lord" by J. Yarley Roberts and sung as a solo by Barbara Croft with parts in background support by the whole choir. The offering was received by George Tufford and Harold Austin and the floral offerings were two arrangements of lilacs and tulips. There is a profusion of lilac trees along the lake shore near Wesleyville as in other parts of Hope Township, and their color and perfume are a springtime delight.
