He showed us a film that was a half hour long and then he went to the grade 6 classes and talked about drugs and peer pressure, I interviewed interviewed a student about the drug presentation. She said that she never knew how drugs could be so harmful to your body. On May 20, Constable Dillon showed us some of the drugs and what they looked like. Some drugs cost more than $800.00. If you ever get asked to try some drugs just say NO! The Run to Calgary By Sarah Black Track and Field is coming up. It is on Tuesday, June 9 for our school. There is a new assignment for the grade three to six classes, they run as many laps as they can. The laps are then transformed into kilometers and are recorded on a large map. The map is a picture of Canada. The idea is to run all the way to Calgary in time for the Calgary Winter Olympics. We've run so many laps already that we're on our way back from Calgary. Most of. the students enjoy this activity and everyone's healthy and getting in shape. Thanks to the teachers for supporting and encouraging the students. Way to go Waverley! Waverley Says Good-bye to a Terrific Lady By Crystal Whyte On Thursday, June 4, Mrs. Bernice Puk was celebrating her retirement with the people she cares about in the Waverley Library. Her husband, sons and daughters were present along with some students and their parents. The staff including Mr. Reid, our principal, expressed their thanks to the people who came. Unfortunately, one of Mrs. Puk's sons was not able to come, but he did surprise her with a taped message. Also her 87 year old mother, Mrs. Sleep, attended the farewell party for her daughter. One of her former students from the class of 1942 at Bethesda School, Rowlie Coombes, also came. The staff at Waverley gave her two presents which included a brass lamp and a very expensive expensive Doulton figurine. At the party there were many types of food to eat like cheese platters, vegetable platters and many different kinds of goodies. To drink there was punch, coffee and tea. Even though I didn't know Mrs. Puk very well, I know Waverley School is losing a terrific lady. Farewell and best wishes Mrs. Puk! Waverley Poems Three poems submitted by Waverley students were selected selected by the Literary Committee for inclusion in this year's poetry anthology for Northumberland and Newcastle Newcastle Board. Sonya Pitts, Gr. 3; Jason Hoefel, Gr. 3 and Peter Carmichael, Gr. 4 were the young authors selected to represent our school. These students will attend a special reception on Monday, June 15 at a school in Port Hope. A guest poet will be addressing the young authors who will be in attendance from across the jurisdiction.
