Section Two The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanvillc, .June 10. 1987 Beavers Enjoy Caveman Day lst Bowmanville Guides Graduate Four Members to Pathfinders Recent Graduates J •> J wst ' ' Unlike our ancestors, the "cavemen of Pontyrock" did not huddle in their caves during the rain that drizzled drizzled down all morning. On Saturday, May 23rd, about 175 Beavers happily hopped from "lava rock" to "lava rock" and gleefully thrust bean bags into the hungry dinosaurs' mouth at the West Durham District Caveman Capers day of fun and sharing. Little did it matter that the dampness turned to a heavier downpour downpour about noon and chilled chilled every Beaver, parent and leader's spine. Our enthusiastic enthusiastic Beavers, spirits never dampened, turned Pontypool Park into their own Pontyrock, complete <with their own version of Fred, Barnic and Wilma, all of whom were waiting round a warming campfire at the end of the "Pebbles Maze" obstacle course. A lifelike Tyrannosaurus Rex really got the point when the Beavers tried to replace its tail!!! Other activities activities included a primitive primitive version of plank bowling bowling where giant "Dino" bones had to be skittled, and then a free for all "slab- minton" game. Roaming around the grounds you would come across cavemen cavemen who had just had cave paintings put on their faces. In fact, if there had been a talent scout for "B.C. The Movie" there, he would have found the cast ready and waiting to fit the bill. The spidery veins and dabs of mud, or sun figures en circling silent menacing mouths would have broken any cameraman's lens. ; A gigantic caveman, or so it seemed amongst our little charges, roamed amongst the crowd. Its black fur, long stringy hair and necklace of real bear claws reminded us of yesteryear. yesteryear. He swung his club teasingly, when not eagerly gobbling up "dino dogs" or demolishing a juicy red apple specially imported from Bowmanstone, the centre of Applerock region. A hot lunch and a rousing campfire and a final closing broguht an end to the days activities, and the Beavers said an early, but fond goodbye goodbye to "Pontyrock". Truly a good, if damp, day was had by all. On Sunday, May 10, at 7:00 a.m., our class of 32 grade six French Immersion students from Ontario Street Public School started our trip to Chicoutimi, Quebec. The purpose of this exchange was a cultural- linguistic experience tied in with a week of fun and laughter. With the music blasting out of the stereo, the bus rocked into Chicoutimi at 7:30 p.m. that night. Two minutes before the students first meeting, we were all hyper and Christiane Paradis and Jaques Lemieux's Chicoutimi group were just plain excited. The initial encounter went very well and we were all very happy to relax after the 12 hour trip. On the Monday, we visited the Town Hall where we were graciously received by the mayor, Mr. Blackburn and shown a slide presentation about the town of Chicoutimi while we drank warm pop. At the end, we all received small gifts. We had a nice visit to the Museum of Saguenay where we saw a TinTin exposition. Later, there were a few accidents, at McDonalds but everybody survived. We then visited a cardboard factory, "Cascade" and the hydroelectric hydroelectric plant, "Shipshaw" where we learned many interesting facts. After our return from our outings, we had a fun-filled evening with our twins. The next day, Tuesday, May 12, "AWHHHHH!" We went flying, executed a couple of quick twists and fell straight into the water. Have you i / X Trade the heat and humidity for the air-conditioned comfort inside your home. We then went to a road safety village in the cold and windy weather where we rode bicycles, go- carts, and a train. We then had lunch after which we went to Bell Canada where we were received with a table full of junk food. After we heard the clicking of the telephone calls and the whispering of the operators, our tour was almost complete. We witnessed machinery of the past products and prospects of the future: Then that day was over. Wednesday, we went to "Cepal", an outdoor ed. center where we played volleyball, made up dances and skits, learned about nature, and rode a horse. We stayed there until 9:00 p.m. On Thursday, we went to the University of Chicoutimi sport center where we played soccer and badminton. We then went to one of the landmarks landmarks of Chicoutimi, the Cross of Ste. Anne where many pictures were taken. For the rest of.the day, most of us went to a shopping center with over 200 stores. On Friday, we had to be at the school at 6:30 a.m. to catch our bus for the long trip home. The entire week was French only and we had many opportunities opportunities to put the French we have learned to practical use. We are anxiously awaiting our twin's return to Bowmanville Bowmanville on May 31.
