"But I was only three- tenths of a second behind the winner (Richard Spenard)," he says. "In fact, I was ahead of him for seven or eight laps before he passed me. It was an excellent excellent day." MacDonald will get his second test of driving in Montreal next weekend, at the Labalt's Grand Prix. He admits to a little nervousness. nervousness. "I've never even seen this track before," he said. "I'm going to have to learn it pretty quick." Celebrity Tournament Hampton resident Randy MacDonald, 24, squats beside his Cliff Mills Pontiac Firebird after a practice practice run on a drizzly Mosport morning. On Sunday, by Jeff Hubbell "I'm not really looking forward to racing in the rain," said 24-year-old driver Randy MacDonald, after taking his Cliff Mills Pontiac Firebird for a practice practice run on a wet and slip pery Mosport track, Friday June 5. MacDonald, a Hampton resident, was preparing for a race on June 7, his first GM/Player's Challenge Series event. The weather Randy placed fifth in his race. was unco-operative, with pouring rain changing to fine drizzle during the morning run. "I need all the practice I can get. If the track is dry, I'll feel good. I've never raced in the rain." first Player's Challenge Police Raise $28,000 for Special Olympics Officer Ron Klosinski, of the Durham Regional Police, catches his breath with wife Debbie and son Ronnie after running one kilometre carrying the Special Olympics torch June 3. The run was the prelude to the Special Olympics floor hockey tournament being held in Toronto. The torch was carried by policemen policemen from Ottawa to Toronto. Fourteen men from 16 Division carried the flame from the Hope/Clark boundary to Townline Road, Oshawa. MacDonald's career as a race driver began when he was 16, roaring aroud the oval track in stock cars. Last year he attended a special school for potential drivers, a three-day regimen of learning to be smooth and consistent on the track. Racing invokes images of glamour and celebrity, but MacDonald says that isn't so. The reality for most is scrambling-to get sponsors and some media attention. The profile is not as high in racing as it is in some other sports. But despite the fact he holds an engineering degree degree from the University of Waterloo, he is willing to undergo the tribulations of the track. "In Canada, it's pretty tough," he says "It's not really really a respected career here, unlike some ■ other sports. For a lot of guys racing's racing's a hobby. To try and make a profession out of a hobby is not easy. You have to consider service and sponsors. It's serious business. business. "The marketing mechanics is a pretty big part of it," he says. "That's usually the complaint of young and new drivers. Tf I only had a sponsor.'" Like other cars racing at Mosport, Randy's resembles resembles a 150 mile-per-hour billboard, a score of sponsors' sponsors' logos tacked prominently prominently over its silver-grey body. But the sponsors were forgotten forgotten briefly on Sunday when the race began, on a dry track. For Randy MacDonald, the race was successful beyond expectations. Out of a field of 37 drivers, he placed fifth, and could very well have finished third had he not made what he termed "the super goof." First you might want to check the box on the table. There's a big difference between the colorful commercial commercial "cru nchies" and the cream of wheat, or oatmeal_porridge that may have been our first cereal experience. Here's what is done to a typical commercial breakfast breakfast cereal: The kernels of grain are stripped of their bran and germ. Sugar, colorings, colorings, flavoring compounds, compounds, and synthetic vitamins vitamins are added and the whole mixture (usually with water added) is called a slurry. The slurry is put into an extruder, a machine with a specially shaped hole at one end, and is heated to very high temperatures. Under great pressure, the slurry is forced out of the extruder, extruder, like icing from an icing bag, and sliced into little shapes. The "cereal" is then carried on a stream of hot air to where it is sprayed with oil and sugar to coat and keep it crisp. Add milk to a bowlful of this and, according to the package, you've got a good dietary source of protein. (Note: milk alone is considered considered a good dietary source of protein.) There arc commercial cereals on the shelves that don't massacre the grain to quite this extent, and more consumers are resisting the advertising and the children's sugar cravings long enough to buy a more nutritious cereal. For those who arc trying, here's some information to help guide you. Whole grains are the seeds of various grasses, including oats, wheat, rye and others. These seeds consist of three main parts: the germ, the bran and the endosperm. The germ is rich in B vitamins, vitamins, vitamin E, protein, minerals, carbohydrates and unsaturated fats. The bran is the outer covering of the grain. It is an important important source of fibre. The endosperm composes the bulk of the grain and it contains mostly starch and incomplete proteins. Unfortunately, Unfortunately, the endosperm endosperm is the part of the grain most often used in commercial grain products. products. Whole grains arc available available in health food stores and can be gradually incorporated incorporated into our diets in many tasty ways. Try brown rice, wheat berries, bulgar, buckwheat or kasha if you'd like to adventure adventure away from the traditional grains, 'courtesy of the Canadian Health Food Association and this newpaper.
