June 24. 1987 Section Two Corvettes are Everywhere as Port Darlington Marina Hosts Club W.I Visits Mushroom Operation Ladies of the W.I. and guests met at.7:30 p.m. at the Darlington Mushroom Farm where they were met by Mike Mannion, owner of the farm. Mike explained how bedding from horse farms is mixed" with several components ana gallons of water and prepared for the beds in the barns. We were taken into several of these houses showing the various stages of growth the mushrooms go through including including harvesting. Mike answered several questions and then we were shown the packaging room where each lady was given a sample of mushrooms to take home. Mrs. A. Vandergaast moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mike for our conducted tour and our gift of mushrooms. The ladies returned to the C.E. Hall for the business part of their meeting. Mrs. H. Prescott acted as Secretary in the absence of Mrs. S. Found. The repeating of the Ode and Lord's Prayer opened the meeting. The Roll Call was "Name a dish that uses mushrooms." Minutes were read, treasurer's treasurer's report given and correspondence dealt with. A letter from Hampton W.I. on a follow-up of a resolution to support pensions for homemakers homemakers was left for each individual member to write to her M.P. In regard to the Butler Project Project for Agriculture kits in the schools implemented by Oxford County's W.I.s, is to be left to September. A short discussion regarding regarding a summer outing to take the boat trip from Holiday Inn in Peterborough up through the lift locks brought a decision decision to go on July 13th. Mrs. A. Hall, Program Co-ordinator will make arrangements and notify the group leaders. Mrs. C. Swallow gave "Good- Neighbors" report. Mrs. W. Brown reported on some W.I. news from Providence-Shaw's and Nestleton W.I. The motto "Buy Canadian, Think Canadian, Live Canadian" was prepared by group leader Mrs. T. Kelsey and read by Mrs. W." Brown. Mrs. Kelsey said in this area the common saying is "Buy the cars your neighbor makes." Joe Cristl from the Farmer's Association says, "Buy the food your neighbors grow." We should start early , in our school system to have the children learn about our own' herbs and our own geography geography and history. Travel across Canada, we have a wealth of natural resources, a vast array of cultural institutions institutions and world famous land marks. Read Canadian books, buy Canadian magazines. ' Pierre E. Mrs. Macdonnell's lovely white farmhouse cottage, where the ladies are sitting, was one of the homes on the tour. Our Emergency Service has been called upon to assist with three families who lost their homes in fires, and I wish to thank all those wonderful people who assisted in many ways with their contributions: To the ladies and gentlemen who work on the Emergency Services teams and are so willing and dependable in taking their turns for the months planned for them; to the church groups who keep the clothing depots going for those in need of assistance. I know how busy you are and the work is endless but most appreciated by those needing it. Thank you also to the ladies from the Seventh Day Adventist Adventist Social Services, who help supply the bedding immediately after fires. Appreciation is also extended extended to the Service Clubs .and Lodges, to the Girl (Suides wno . prepare emergency bags, and to the Boy Scouts who give their help whenever needed. The churches participating in the emergency plan are as follows; St. Paul's United Church, St. John's Anglican Church, Trinity United Church, The Salvation Army, The Seventh Day Adventist Churches, Oshawa and Bowmanville, ' The Catholic Women's League and Knights of Columbus. We welcome any church group who would like to assist us. Our sickroom equipment loan cupboard fills a need for those in temporary need of wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, etc. and 89 pieces of equipment were given out last year.
