Serving Oshawa and area for over 75 years. % COOPER-SMITH 16 Celina Street, Oshawa Give us a call 571-1541 Designers of machinery build in automatic systems which warn of malfunctions, low fuel and damaged circuitry. When output exceeds tolerance, when intakes are outside a specified range, fuses blow, lights flash and power is shut off. The seat-belt light and buzzer in our cars are safety reminders. Without the oil light, we might forget to check the oil and risk ruining the car's engine. As a backup to the fuel gauge, a useful little light signals low fuel. Years ago, car' manufacturers dressed up the speedometer with a circle of red fluorescent light that glowed brighter at higher speeds. A reminder that speed kills. Alarm systems warn of intruders. The yellow light warns us that the traffic is about to flow the other way. Sirens, screams, growling dogs, the smell of smoke or burning rubber alert us to danger. We respond with a fire extinguisher, by applying the brakes, by getting out of the way, by being calm. We're also designed with built-in warning systems that alert us to impending trouble. We experience many signs of emotional and physical stress; anxiety, fatigue, boredom, headaches, backaches, fits of temper, alcoholic binges, depression. But I think we're pretty good at ignoring and misreading our "tilt" signals. Temporary relief from toothache pain feels great when the aspirin begins to work. At that point, the pain is the problem and all we're thinking about is symptomatic relief. The anti-depressant, the tranquillizer, the vacation, the new clothes also bring temporary relief from emotional distress. They mask the signs'/mute the pain and shorten our. memory of what might have been the basic problem. Disconnecting our car's low- fuel warning signal eliminates the irritating light, but we'll still run out of gas. Furthermore, anxiety, fatigue, boredom and frustration are as common as the commom cold. Somehow, we've persuaded ourselves that they're inevitable, just a normal part of everyday life. So, by ignoring them, masking them or accetping them as routine and normal, we've reduced the effectiveness of our warning system. We get ill, emotionally or physically, when we don't act on our sometimes vague discomfort. Most of us are more sensitized to signs predicting imminent danger to our cars than we are to warnings of emotional or physical trouble. And when we do get sick, emotionally or physically, we're often taken by surprise. It's as though we want to be as opaque to ourselves as we try to be to others. Why are some people frequently ill and others seldom ill? Part of the answer lies, I think, in the degree of rational interest we take in our inner experience of ourselves, and in the accuracy with which we label vague, inner discomforts, diagnose their causes and attend to them^ In this connection, it appears true that those who are most transparent to themselves and to others seem better able to acknowledge and correctly diagnose their inner experience. Their chances of good emotional and physical health seem better.
