In Editor's Mail 140 Ontario St. Bowmanville, Ontario July 10, 1987 Dear John; It has been a few weeks since I last wrote to you so, before starting on vacation, I thought I would drop you a few lines. I noticed in the last report to Council from the finance department a number of places asking for a tax refund refund or cancellation for different different reasons and I note that a big majority of them give the reason as going out of business, so you see that even though we don't have the proposed Baseline Mall it still happens. Speaking about malls, it is interesting to note that of all the places between Hamilton and Kingston, the Town of Newcastle Newcastle appears to be the only one without a fair size mall. Isn't it nice to know that we are the only ones that are right and everybody everybody else is wrong. That should ruffle some feathers. feathers. Some time ago, John, I mentioned to you that the move was on the way for more full time help in the fire department. It seems to have been held off for some reason, but let me make a prediction that it will surface surface by the end of July. I have been talking to certain persons who make the decisions decisions and I won't tell you what they have told me but we will wait and see what happens. Then and only then will we know how good their word is. Then there comes the talk about the 911 answering service and I say we have the best answering service and are paying disgracefull wages ($2.98) per hour. That we should be changing. In my opinion the taxpayer cannot afford any more and in case members of the regional regional and local council arc not a ware, people on a fixed income do not have a way such as they do to increase their earnings (and I use that term loosely). As I understand understand this setup will cost the taxpayer over a million dollars just to start this system system then there is the huge empire it will create which will have to be paid for. In this system I notice that it will also include the ambulance ambulance service and does this mean that we will get a rebate rebate from 0HIP payments because we are now paying for this service? A service of this type will cost a huge amount of money and if I am reading right what people are saying to me they don't have any more to give. As a service of this kind will be placed on the tax bill including including the merchants who are in many cases overtaxed overtaxed now, we can expect more persons asking for tax rebates using the reason 'GOING OUT OF BUSIN- SESS'. Well John, I will close for I now but you watch and see how your representatives on council vote on the above matter then you will know | who to talk to when you get your next tax bill. 1 So long for now John Ken Hooper P.S. John I have checked this letter over fairly close and I don't think there is cause for a lawsuit, but then again a person must be careful for fear that it may tarnish their image.
