Newcastle. 1 PANTHERS FOLD -- We don't like to be the bearers j of bad news, but the fact of the matter is that the Port t Hope Panthers will not be icing a team this season. i Apparently the club has had some difficulty forming ' an adequate team and has requested permission to withdraw from the league for a year. We hope they'll be back in 1988-89 because the team was always a drawing drawing card in the Junior C league and the rivalry between between Port Hope and Cobourg is historic. Port Hope had been slated as the opposition to Bowmanville in Sunday's Eagles' home game. As this is being written, we're not certain how the Junior C schedule will be re-arranged now that Port Hope is no longer part of the season. We hope to have a note in the Bits and Pieces column explaining what was decided at a league meeting Tuesday night, October 13. The event takes, place between the hours of 10 a.m. and noon, with lanes donated by Liberty Bowl. The Bowmanville Goodyear Eagles started the regular season with two big wins on the weekend. On Friday, at Trenton, the game started rough, taking only 12 seconds for the first penalty. Less than three minutes minutes into the game, Bowmanville Bowmanville got on the board with Willy McGarvey's first of four goals of the night. Shortly alter that, Pierre St. Amand had to leave the game ÿl'ter receiving a cheap spear to the stomach on which no penalty was called. (He was unable to play in Sunday's game.) the pressure on in the middle middle of the first period, scoring scoring three goals in a matter of five minutes. But that was all lor them as Bowmanville scored one more in the first and then blew them away in the second, scoring three shorthanded and two pow- erplay goals. They finished them off by scoring two more goals in the third period. Besides Willy McGarvey's four goals. George Pithy and Brad Cruess each got a pair and Mark Hickey scored the other. Scott Webster had a fine performance, stopping 40 shots and only allowing The Golden Hawks put three goals. The final score Toros Win 5-1 Over Red Wings The Peewee Toro B team Blois assisted by Tyson Pear- played their first exhibition game on Sunday, October 11 against Oshawa Redwings of the little NHL. For the minor peewees it was an eyeopener as they experienced some "legal"\ cey. Two goals were scored in the second period. Matt Aitk- en let a terrific slapshot go from the blue line to score the second goal. Assists on Matt's _goal were given to body contact for the first Tyson Pearcey and Jeremy g am e. Woodcock. was 9-3 for the Eagles. The Eagles' home opener Sunday night at Bowman-: ville Arena was pretty much the same. A hard hitting game with Ajax Axemen having a total ol'136 minutes of penalties. At times the players were sitting in the stands as there was no room in the penalty box. Bowmanville cleaned up in the first period, scoring six goals, and only allowing two in i,their net. Second period looked like a possible possible comeback as the Axe- • men scored the next two goals but the Eagles came on late to even the period totals at two apiece. The Eagles scored the next three in the third. The Axemen scored the final goal which was loo little little too late as Bowmanvillc won 11-5. Chris Dreossi led the team, scoring five of the Bowmanville goals. Brad Cruess scored a pair and Brian Heard, Murray Henderson, Henderson, Steve Terry and Jeff Dawson each scored one apiece. Sunday was also in-v illation for the rookies. Nice haircuts, boys. - Scott Reay. Coggins-100. High : High Doubles: C. Peldiak- 230; C. Gusterson-205; A.
