This was a very evenly played match, as the lead swung back and forth several times throughout the game. It was evident that the team who got the last shot would win. Millbrook demonstrated demonstrated their power by defeating our team 10-3. Goal scorers were: Tyson Pearcy (2), Steve de Blois (1). Assists went to Jeremy Wookcock (2), Collin Taggart (1), and Tracey Lemke (1). It appears that it will be a major chore to defeat this Millbrook team. On Sunday, October 25, Omemee played us at Darlington. Darlington. This was our second game with them; again a repeat repeat of the first match- a very tight game. The score was 0-0 at tne end of the first but Omemee came on strong to score two fast ones in the second. However, the Toros didn't give up, as Tracey Lemke scored two goals and Jeremy Woodcock scored one to defeat Omemee 3-2. November 4. 11)87 1) Optimist Club Busy at Flea Market A Classic Class! by Jennifer Little Mrs. VanSeggelen's grade one class has such colourful bulletin board displays all around their classroom. They're filled with sponge painting of fall trees, cut and paste items for Hallowe'en and colorful painting about the room from the subject "Art"-In Math, Mrs. VanSeg- gelen has prepared activity centers for tne students. They match cards together and practise more than and less than. The class has calendar calendar activities in which they talk about the weather and learn words such as today today and yesterday. They also keep a tally of how many days school has been attended. Pupils read easy books from the reading corner. corner. They also read chart stories stories about the colors and fall seasons. In Environmental Studies they have worked on "All About Me" unit. They are beginning Hallowe'en work. Students usually sing favourite songs during Music. Music. They really enjoy silly or funny songs and songs with action. Mrs. VanSeggelen's class has been "rained out" on an apple trip. They hope to go to the pumpkin patch and the Tyrone Mill soon. In gym, pupils are learning how to use the space properly. properly. They really enjoy using the parachute. Right now they are practising catching skills. Well, it sounds like this grade one class is having a good year so far. Keep up the good work! Mrs. Ough's Class by Heather Watson Mrs. Ough has had a busy and fun past month. In Math they are counting on their number board. They are also counting space men on the computer. For Spelling they are tilling in missing letters. In Reading they are reading fairy tales and Big Books. In Art the students are drawing and painting pictures that they like to do. Soccer - by Mark Brooks At Waverley this year we have a jvery good interschool interschool soccer team. The team is made up of kids who enjoy soccer from grades four, five and six. The team was picked by Mr. Ralfe, a grade six teacher, and Mr. Reid, the principal. Mr. Ralfe and Mr. Reid picked the team from about five or six tryouts held mainly on Thursdays. They picked it out of a group of abouV24 students. The Waverley team has been progressing very well and has had two wins, one tie and one loss. The players get quite a bit of a workout running up and down the field and at the same time getting the soccer skill. Our Waverley team plays either at our field or one of the other schools in the area. Houseleague Dodgeball by Mark Brooks For the first houseleague game the junior leaders chose dodge hall. Kids from grades four to six who want 1 to play houseleague dodge-' ball can. It is not like an interschool interschool team, for with house-' league there is no limit of people who can play. In the houseleague dodgeball there are just over 110 students involved. involved. These 110 students were split up into eight teams. In this game there are two teams ana they are given given about 20 to 25 minutes to play three games. There is a set of rules for each type of houseleague game tola in a meeting with all house- league players together in the gym. It is held sometimes at recess but mainly during . the lunch hour which is from 12:30 to ten or five to one. These houseleague players play their game in the gym. Most of the students usually don't have anything good to do so this gives them something something worthwhile and exciting exciting to do at lunch time. A Busy Month for Mrs. Bradley's Class - by Chantal Axelson Mrs. Bradley's grade three class is starting off the second second month of school well. To start them off the students are going to be publishing stories on the computer.' Each student will get to write a story on the computer and publish it. They are finishing up their Insect study in Environmental Environmental Studies. I asked Tracey Bird if she liked studying studying insects, she said "Yes, I did. She also said "she liked to study the lady bug best." They nave been learning new songs and learning how to write different kinds of poetry. To help them study insects they went to the library library at the school to do research. research. The students in Mrs. Bradley's class are doing these activities to help them learn how to write interesting interesting stories and how to proof read and edit their stories. To arouse the children's interest With cries of "Make me an offer I can't refuse" these members of the Bowmanville Optimist Club had a booth at the flea market at the mall on Sunday, in these topics, Mrs. Bradley has movies for them to see and pictures inthe class and researching in books. To help the students leam, some of the children's parents have come into the class to help them in their classroom activities. Mrs. Anyan helped the students in the library to find information on insects and to teach them more things about them. I hope the students have fun working, with Mrs. Bradley this year. I didn't know insects could be so much fun! On Monday of this week, thirteen pupils from Waverley Waverley left tne school to go for the harrier (cross country running) meet at the Enniskillen Enniskillen Conservation Area. There were ten boys and three girls running the gruelling race. The circuit went up a large hill, then over to an even larger one that was then run down. After After that the runners entered a stretch of forest and long grass that went on for about 200m. After passing through October 24. Though the temperatures were a little nippy, nippy, the group's spirits were nigh as they offered many different articles at bargain prices. a gate they entered a field that had a stream running through the middle which had a bridge crossing it. Then it was back into a forest forest to the finish line. Many schools competed and Waverley's Aaron Stoker Stoker placed sixth inthe boys' race. That may not sound too good but consideing there were 60 or 70 people competing that was great. Thomas Cookson was in second second place when he hit a rail and fell. That was an unfortunate unfortunate accident. I hope there is a harrier next year because because we all had a ball. Take your mark! Get Set! Go! And the runners were off! The race took them up and down hills, across a field, and through a forest. After a great but tiring race Jessica Barrie placed first, Amanda Dykstra placed 7th, and Laura Laura Brannigan placed 8th out of the top ten girls from Vincent Vincent Massey and out of the top 10 boys Steven Oke placed 8th.
