Ü V m i M mm llhfo mam Landfill Site Closes Dec. 31st by Gretchen Ballantyne The waste transfer station station located at the Darlington Darlington Landfill Site, will be closing its doors for good, December 31. Regional councillors at the November 2 council council meeting, voted in favour of shutting the station down. It has been in operation for the last three months. "There has been a lot of concern raised over the dump site. It is not in an appropriate location and closing it will mean a financial savings for the Town of Newcastle," Mayor John Winters told the councillors. The transfer site was opened August 17 to replace replace the Darlington Landfill Site which closed August 15. It was believed that the site would provide a convenient dumping location location for residents in the Town of Newcastle who did not receive regular regular garbage collection, said the works committee committee in their report to the region. However the Town of Newcastle received a number of complaints about the location. Mr. and Mrs. Craig, a couple whose property adjoins the site, were deeply concerned with further aggravations connected to the waste transfer station. The Craigs sent letters to the Town of Newcastle with a list of their grievances. ■ "Council now wants to continue to use this poor bit of abused land as a transfer station. Why should it be necessary to truck junk 15 to 20 miles out here, and then truck the same stuff south again when the bins are full," queried Mr. Craig. On average, 30 vehicles vehicles a day have made use of the station. A total of 484 tonnes of refuse was disposed of from August 17 to October 31. Despite this, the works .! department concluded . the future cost to con- ;; tinue the operation, the -./ letters of opposition and _ the motion of the Town of Newcastle council, all suggest closure of the site as the best alternative. alternative. Furthermore the site is located about five miles from the Cartwright Transfer Station. Station. The need for two such facilities in such close proximity is questionable, questionable, said the works report. Of the Newcastle councillors councillors present, all but Councillor Ann Cowman voted in favour of closure. closure. She expressed some concern over the effect on residents and the town, if the site is closed. "I have been told residents residents have been denied access to the dump in Blackstock. And what if residents go to the station station in Ritson in Oshawa, will Oshawa just send us the bill, and we can do nothing ?" she asked Regional Regional Works Commissioner Commissioner Bill Twelvetrees. Mr. Twelvetrees assured assured the councillor the only negative impact on Newcastle residents would be the inconvenience inconvenience of having to go to another site. He said Blackstock would be among their choices. He also pointed out the present present location is not central central to the Town of Newcastle. Newcastle. Regional staff has been authorized to negotiate with the Central Central Lake Ontario Conservation Conservation Authority for the future use of the property as an extension of the adjacent conservation conservation area.
