Hobbs Public School got a first hand look at many different occupations last week. The annual "Career Day", held on Wednesday, December 3, featured over two dozen various careers and gave the students a chance to talk to the professionals. Hobbs Public School received received a helping hand last week at their annual "Career Day". , Two dozen representa tives from various occupations occupations were present at the school on Wednesday, November November 2, for four half-hour seminars. The students were able to choose their occupations of interest several weeks prior to the one-day event, and most received their first choice, according to Heather Hooper, a teacher's teacher's assistant at the school. It was quite a success, as Celebration Marks United Way's Success The end of the 1987 United Way fund raising campaign was heralded with celebrations at Elusions night club in Oshawa. Garnet Rickard was one of several several divisional chairmen who reported on the campaign. Mr. Rickard was in charge of personal gifts and foundations and reported a total of $172,512. Although Although this year's overall goal of $2.6 million was narrowly missed, campaign organizers were extremely happy with the results. Many groups and organizations organizations in the Town of Newcastle helped to make the drive a great success. Several groups of students students also took field trips to various places, including the Flying Dutchman Hotel, Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home, and the Durham Journal, to get a better idea of the careers involved. Furthermore, Furthermore, the students also got a better idea of exactly what is available to them in the future. "They can go in and do anything," said Nancy Rae, a family studies teacher. According to Mrs. Rae, the students are exposed to many non-traditional roles as well. Most of the work for "Career Day" is in finding the representatives. After the students fill out their forms on which occupations they would like to see, staff try to pinpoint as large a variety as possible. "They (the speakers) are very obliging to the school," said Mrs. Rae. Many of the people present had to arrange arrange for time off or make alternate working arrangements arrangements in order to take part in "Career Day". At the end of each presentation, presentation, students were given the chance to ask questions. Some even got a hands on look at the speaker's work, as was the case in cake decorating decorating and creative careers. While trying to make a decision decision about a career can be difficult, "Career Day" at M. J. Hobbs certainly sets the students on the right foot. Vincent Massey News Come one! Hannah Whately. Mrs. Medd is a really neat teacher! Instead of a Hallowe'en Hallowe'en party she had a monster party. Now she is having a bird Christmas instead instead of a normal party. We have birds hanging from the ceiling and bird feeders and projects displayed in the room. Mrs. Medd also said she's putting up an odd tree but she didn't say what it would look like. She has painted Toastmasters Club Receives Charter on 1st Anniversary The first anniversary of the Bowmanville Toastmasters was celebrated Tuesday, December 1, in a meeting at the Lions Centre. In addition, the Toastmasters Club also celebrated the fact that they were awarded their charter and officially recognized recognized as a Toastmasters Club. The non-profit organization organization meets once a week, encouraging the develop ment of members' speaking and listening skills. So you see, we have some very creative kids in Mrs. Dolan's class. Samantha McDonald. . In Mr. Stapleton's class we are doing multiplying for math. In Environmental Studies we are doing a unit on communications. We also have I.B.M. computers on line and in reading we are doing Individual Reading Reading with the super sleuth's You read a book and choose one card on Sherlock Hound's Comprehension, Detective Duck's Phonics, Inspector Bones Word Study or Private Eye Pete's Creations.
