She, too, was present at the Lions meeting meeting and discussed the specific specific functions of this local diabetic education service. "We use a multi-disciplinary multi-disciplinary team approach to teach people with diabetes how to cope. We have a specialist in internal medicine, a pharmacist, a physiotherapist, a dietician and a nurse on hand," explained Mrs. MacPher- son, who is the nurse in the program. The diabetic attends a one week session at Memorial Memorial Hospital. The individual individual is encouraged to bring a member of their family or spouse with them. They are then educated on how to maintain a healthy, active life while taking responsible responsible action in controlling controlling their disease. "We know that diabetes doesn't last for just one . week, so we give the patient ongoing support once they leave our program," added Mrs. MacPherson. Marlene Grass admitted in the past many diabetics were not being served, the major reason was the cost of the education program. The Diabetic Association needs financial help to continue continue expanding these programs programs into smaller communities. communities. "It was a great break when the Lions International International declared they would support the Diabetes Association. Association. By poolingourre- sources maybe one day we can find a cure. But for now educating the diabetics is our big job," she told the Lions. Mrs. Grass pointed out that 1 in 20 people will get diabetes, and the most severe severe type hitsourchildren. "We have 700 diabetics in our area and the numbers are growing. Our goal is to keep pace with the demands demands in the community. Rather than offering the session once a month we will be able to run full time," Mrs. MacPherson concluded. The Bowmanvillc program program has a waiting list of 4 to 6 weeks . Association. People believe that some how it is the diabetics' fault that they have the disease. Either they eat too many sweets or are too heavy. Whatever the reason, there are those who feel that the diabetic could have prevented prevented the disease. These assumptions are completely false, Mrs. Grass told the Lions Club, December December 7, at their dinner meeting. "Fears and myths surround surround diabetes and people just won't listen to the facts. Diabetics are even forced to prove themselves in society, society, and at their jobs. De monstrating that they are as capable as anyone else," Mrs. Grass stated. A diabetic education program was begun at Memorial Hospital, Bow- manville in September of this year.
