Challice 45th Wedding Anniversary Many guests were at Franklin House, Bethany on Thursday, December 10 for the happy occasion of the 45th wedding anniversary anniversary of Andrew and Janette Munneke, Orono. Franklin house is of course owned and operated by their only son, Albert and wife Barbara. Barbara. Reverend John and Mrs. Zantingh, Bowmanville were special guests and the minister voiced the good wishes of all present and asked the blessing on the happy couple. Many lovely gifts, flowers and plants were displayed and the guests present enjoyed enjoyed a delicious buffet luncheon, and the bride and groom cut and served the pretty wedding cake. CHRISTMAS DISPLAYS Many eye-appealing Christmas Christmas decorated homes throughout the village and Orono estates. One of the most innovative we've seen, is back at the Enterprise area, at the home of Mac and Norma Ransberry. Mac was telling us, it took approximately approximately three weeks to assemble the 30ft sleigh and eight reindeer, complete with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. It's all constructed of plywood and the reindeer are all mobile! The Ransberrys have for several several years, had eye-catching Christmas displays, but this one is a real show- stopper! TOWN HALL CARD PARTY A good crowd at the weekly card party on Wednesday December 9, in Orono town hall. With the following results - high scorers -1. Ray Bester 84,2. Bob Simpson 82, 3. "The Colour of Love" was the theme for the annual "White Gift Service on Sunday, Sunday, December 13, at Orono United Church. The Sunday School superintendent Mrs. Pam Werry welcomed the large crowd and the children children gave readings and sang the lovely Christmas music. Their many friends send speedy get-well wishes to Mrs. Sadie Hamilton, and Mrs. Velma Armstrong, both ladies suffered severe falls recently. Mrs. Hamilton Hamilton is at home, but Mrs. Armstrong is in hospital. On Sunday December 20, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Taylor will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary, with a reception for immediate family, in Terrace Room, Strathaven where Charles is a patient. Congratulations to a grand old gentleman, Mr. Earnest Nicholson, Lindsay (formerly Orono) who recently recently celebrated his 102nd birthday. He is the father of Floyd Nicholson well- known to all in this area, and grandfather to Mrs. Fay Burnham, all of Orono. It has been a rather sad week (Past), for the correspondent correspondent as we lost our beloved beloved father, Harvey Aiken. He passed away very suddenly suddenly Sunday, December 13, in Strathaven. We are glad to report his entire family visited him that afternoon afternoon and found him in good spirits. Death came suddenly and he was not called to suffer. He had enjoyed enjoyed his 90th birthday party last August, at Franklin house. His many friends in Strathaven will miss him too. Reverend Schamerhorn officiated at the funeral service, on Tuesday, December 15 from Morris Funeral Chapel. 4T. CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY Approximately 62 members members and guests sat down to a delicious full-course turkey turkey dinner on Thursday evening December 17, in the Sr. Citizens Complex hall. The decorations were certainly eye-catching and tables were very colorful, with pots of poinsettias and real live holly, from B.C. The menu consisted of a tasty cranberry salad, followed followed by rolls, turkey, dressing, dressing, gravy, turnip and peas, potatoes and followed by Christmas pudding and sauce and cake and tea and coffee. Added treats were of course, liquor-filled chocolates, chocolates, and grape juice and wines. The highlight of the event was the arrival of Santa Claus and everyone present received a gift. Happy Birthday for December December was sung, with Gladys Brown at the piano - to - Gladys Woodward; June Buck; Marjorie Best; George Dunlop; Doreen Lake; Robert Chater and Bob Cayley. Everyone enjoyed the sing-along, again with Gladys at piano, to close a very enjoyable evening. A vote of thanks to the girls who served, and to the ladies who decorated and prepared the dinner. AROUND THE WORLD TRIP Marjorie Somerville, Bowmanville, Leila Werry and Thelma Gilbank, Orono, recently returned from a fantastic trip "Around The World". They visited 15 countries flying on a Worldways DC8, chartered chartered for the trip. Some of the places visited - Rio de Janeiro; Fiji; New Zealand; Australia; Babi; Singapore; Hong Kong; Bangkok; India; Egypt; Istanbul, Turkey and Lisbon. Memorable trips to Falkland Falkland Islands, where they were escorted in with two fighter planes and met by the Defense Corps. Another interesting interesting visit was to Easter Island. Island. Since there was no hotel large enough to accommodate accommodate the group of 165 travellers, they stayed overnight overnight in small hotels and local guest homes. Easter Island is noted for its stone statues, which brings a mystery mystery to this place. What is the importance of these gigantic statues and how were they transported hundreds- hundreds- of years ago? These guestions still remain remain unanswered evén though archaeologists have been trying to find the answers answers for thirty years. Orono United Church News Despite the poor weather conditions on Sunday morning, morning, a good attendance for Christmas Sunday. A very special musical treat was provided the congregation by the "Mellotones", our local orchestra, consisting of Carlos Tamblyn, Gladys Brown, Doreen and James Lowery, Carman White and Reverend Milnes. St. Saviour's Church News The Sacrament of Holy Communion at St. Saviours on Sunday morning, with Reverend Douglas Hall, our new rector officiating. There will be Christmas Eve services at St. Saviours at 8 p.m. with communion. Also Sunday December 27, at 9.30 a.m. morning prayer and Holy Baptism. Class Trip On December 2, the Grade 4 & 5 class went up to the grist-mill and then walked back to the school house, but Vivi and I stayed back to look after the fire in the wood stove that would warm the school house. After everybody came back we did Math on slates. A slate is like a chalk board but it is smaller. Then we cut our fruit and vegetables and made a stew with it. With our fruit we made a fruit salad. salad. At recess we played Aun- tee Auntee Over. Tne object of the game is to throw the ball over either the school or the house. Now there were some people on one side of the senool or the house and other people on the other side of the school or house, and if one person caught the ball then the team ran around the building with their hands behind their backs. If the guy that had the ball touched someone and showed them the ball then the person who got caught had to go on the other team. On December 15, Room 203 Ç ut on a play about spelling. hey didn't know now to spell SANTA and then a boy gave them some cards and they spelled SANTA. Then they sang fiva Christmas carols. On December 16 Room 103 put on a play about Baby Jesus's birth. Our class would like to thank Mrs. Shirran for letting room 103 use the costumes. This week we had carol singing every day. Our school's favourite favourite song is I'm Getting Nuttin' for Christmas, by Leah Gust Gr. 3 Our first Christmas assembly assembly was Monday, December December 14. We sang songs that had the words in a book. Then for the last song, Mr. St. John put up a big paper and we sang what was on it. We sang Jingle Bell Rock. At the next assembly we did the same thing, except Mrs. Derry's Derry's class put on a play "How to Spell Santa". Then the next assembly Mrs. Fall's class put on a play "How Baby Jesus Was Bom". Visit to Mamwood House On Wednesday, December December 16 Mrs. Murphy's Gr. 1 and 2 and Mrs. Derry's Special Special Education class visited the residents of Mamwood House. While there they performed performed a short play, sang a song that had a rhythm band part, recited a poem and had a sing-song.
