That is the question that Orono resident, Helen Schmid, asked town councillors councillors at their meeting on Monday, January 25. Mrs. Schmid was before councillors to ask that part of Ochonski Road (which runs from Taunton Road to the 3rd Concession in Orono) be, returned to the more popular name Lockhart Lockhart Road. • According to Mrs. Schmid, the first map that named the roads labelled the three parts of the road Ochonski, Laing and Lockhart. Lockhart. A second map of the area showed the names to be Ochonski, Squair and Lockhart. "If the general rule was to name our roads after early settlers how did the name Ochonski get on all three side roads?" asked Mrs. Schmid. "It seems it would be more appropriate to use the names of the settlers who contributed to the community" community" she added. Mrs. Schmid questioned the removal of the name Lockhart Road from the side road running from the 4th Concession to the 3rd Concession in favor of Ochonski. She explained that the Squair family came to Orono in 1850 and built a flour mill. They later sold 100 acres to the Lockhart family. Mrs. Schmid presented a petition to councillors containing containing 30 names. All wanted the name Ochonski removed from the road. The road naming issue has been referred to the public works department.
