Karen Kinsman remembers remembers what it is like to be 13 years old. The 28-year-old Bowmanville Bowmanville woman is half of a very .successful match with the Big Sisters of Newcastle- Oshawa-Whitby. / Thirteen-year-old Nanci- Anne Petrie is the other half. The two have been matched since March 1987 and both agree that it has made a difference in their lives. ' Under the mandate of the. Big Sisters program, the .pair is supposed to meet at least once a week for several several hours. While neither of .them punches a time clock for appointments, they somehow manage to make the time. As they explain it, the .friendship is worth the effort. effort. "If I have a problem I can .talk to Karen and get it off my chest," said Nanci- Anne. ; Both admit that their first 'meeting caused some nervous nervous feelings. But, it wasn't long before the friendship was struck for good. Their activities have included included roller-skating, swimming, a trip to the movies or a chance to sit down and talk. All Big and Little Sisters meet on a monthly basis for group activities. "It gives you the feeling of being part of an organization," organization," said Karen. One of the first steps to becoming a Big Sister is attending attending an orientation. A presentation by a Big Sister gives interested women a chance to talk to someone who is actually in the program. program. Karen and Nanci- Anne recently attended one such orientation in order to give some insight for potential potential Big Sisters about what to expect. Both Karen and Nanci- Anne offer advice to anyone who is thinking of getting involved involved with the Big Sister program. "You have to accept that you aren't going to change them, you're just there to be part of their life," said Karen. "You should like kids," said Nanci-Anne. "If you're interested, go for it," she added. The pair are quickly approaching approaching the one year mark in their friendship. At that time, an evaluation of the match is done and the match can be dissolved. Fortunately, neither Karen or Nanci-Anne seem in a hurry to do that. February 6-13 is Big Sisters Sisters Week in Ontario and a great time to find out more about the very worthwhile program.
