Tracy Fames (left) took the outstanding effort and achievement award for the senior category while fellow skater, Mary Murphy, was honored in the intermediate intermediate division. Also presented with an award, but absent from the photo is junior skater, Christopher Wilhelm. The carnival wraps up a successful season for the Orono skaters. On our 50 Anniversary year Daffodil Day was a real success with all Daffodils sold by 3 p.m. The girls out selling around the town, are to be commended for a job well done! These early blooms in the spring represent a sense of hope and renewed life, and annually annually we celebrate Daffodil Day at the beginning of April - a kickoff kickoff for the Cancer Campaign. Today, Today, daffodils have become as much of a symbol of the Canadian Cancer Society as the Caduceus Pin! Cartwright canvassers are out in full force under the direction of Pat Sleep, our Campaign Director for this area. With many volunteer canvassers offering their services we should have a good campaign. Please "dig deep" to help them in this tremendous tremendous drive for funds! Let us conquer conquer Cancer with a check-up and a Cheque! Easter News Happy Birthday at Eastertime! Cliff Davis, Hyde House, Scugog Point Rd., celebrated his birthday, April 6, in fine style with a delectable dinner at Emiel's Place Restaurant in Port Perry. His wife Chris, and sons Scott and Carleton and friends Julie Richardson, Claire Notman and Kelly Wright, also helped him celebrate! The super meal was topped off with a birthday cake - sparklers and Emiel's Staff sang Happy Birthday! A very delightful party! Our "Best Wishes" to Cliff for many more happy years! Ralph & Leona Sadler had an enjoyable Easter dinner with Richard & Janice MacKenzie, Claire & Leslie of Nestleton. John & Marion Hall, Port Perry & Wms. Russell & Edda Bowman, St. Christopher, were Saturday morning morning tea guests with Sam & Mabel Cawker at the farm, Scugog Point Rd., and Sylvia Cawker, daughter Chandre, and mother Mabel Tivamlev of Scarborough, were Easter dinner guests. All enjoyed the visit! General U.C.W. Meeting The meeting of the Nestleton General U.C.W. was held March 29 in the Church S.S. room with the Evening Unit as hostess. Many attended and enjoyed the participation play based on the Easter story. President Janice MacKenzie set the scene and led this meaningful devotional which included Easter hymns and lovely lovely solos and duets by the members. Kay Notman introduced the giiest speaker Kathleen Petrie from Anaida Nurseries, Blackstock, who gave members interesting pointers to start the spring gardening. A question and answer period followed wherein many members received answers to gardening problems. It was a pleasure to have Anita Davis honour Jean Williams with a life membership in the U.C.W. - on behalf of Jean's mother Ella Bowers. This Award was presented for years of faithful service. During business Barb Weir made an appeal for used stamps and Campbell soup labels which assist Third World Relief Programs. Programs. Members decided to share a summer outing in Lindsay Lindsay - to include a boat trip, dinner and theatre. The annual Spring Smorgasbord will be held May 6, at the Nestleton Community Centre. Centre. Look out for news of the Fall Fundraiser - Corn Roast and Dance to be held the first part of September. The U.C.W. will be collecting good used summer clothing in the church basement for the month of April. The meeting closed with the Mizpah Benediction.. .followed by à bountiful lunch and social time. Nestleton Women's Institute a Annual Meeting Nestleton Branch met in April at the new apartment of president Neta Fish, on Wednesday Anril 6 at 1:30 p.m. After the usual opening opening with the Ode and Mary Stewart Collect, District President President Violet Ashton of Solina, was cordially welcomed. Visitors were given a warm welcome also. The president read an appropriate peom "Easter Joy." Minutes of thé March meeting were approved as read by secretary Gwendolyn Malcolm, and treasurer Rika Wygerde gave the financial statement. Roll call - payment of dues for 1988-89. The District Annual Annual will be held Wednesday, May 4, at Maple Grove. Annual Meeting The president presided-and- called on secretary Gwendolyn Malcolm who read the minutes of the last Annual meeting and treasurer's report was given by Rika Wygerde. The Coordinator's Coordinator's report covering programs programs and work of the year was given by Gwen and she also gave her Curator's report. Public Relations Relations Officer Winnifred Davison presented the report (new form) for P.R.O. The election of- Officers was conducted by the District President President Violet Ashton, after some explanation explanation of the new handbook. Bertha McLaughlin and Mabel Dayes brought in the report of the nominating committee. After Officers Officers were duly installed...a programme programme was of interest! The guest speaker Violet Ashton presented some worthwhile thoughts on "what the Institute really means to the community and you." A reading by Irene McKee...a sing song of Easter songs with Gwen at the organ...and a contest, completed the program. Refreshments were served by Bertha McLaughlin and Winnifred Winnifred Davison assisted by the hostess. Marg. France expressed appreciation to those in charge, and a special thank you was extended extended to Violet Ashton, District President, by Rika Wygerde. Second was a four way tie - Albert Watt, Teresa Berkers, Linda Lavoie & Glenna Dean each holding 76. Low - Paul Krawetts with 53. Sympathy Extended Deepest sympathy to Jim Fraser and his family of Shady Acres (Emerson Beach) in the tragic death of his beloved wife Dolly, who died as the result of a car accident in the Mount Albert area, Easter weekend. The Frasers have lived at Shady Acres for 35 years and have à family of six boys and one girl. Mrs. Fraser was a very devoted mother...and the Frasers have always been a closely knit family! family! Jim was injured in the accident accident as well - but - we do not know at time of writing whether he is in hospital or able to be released. Crawford spoke on "Following "Following the Divine Pattern" from Philippians Ch. 2. Music by Anne Maschke & Kathleen Watt. The children's Church was directed by Lyn Arney. Rev. Charles Clarke will be the speaker next Sunday, April 17 at 11 a.m. The ceremony of Baptism will be a part of the service. Try to attend!
