In the accompanying pages, you'll find articles and advertisements which present an up-to-date account of the Town of Newcastle's business community. It is a very large understatement to note that much has happened over the past few years within the Town of Newcastle. Perhaps a summary of these events would be appropriate here in order to put those years in context and provide an overview of the Town of Newcastle's Newcastle's economic outlook. The town is clearly in the third year of unprecedented growth. Building permit statistics which record construction activity in our town tell much of the story. Last year, in 1987, the Town of Newcastle's construction activity broke the $100 million mark for the first time in history. A total of $112.9 million worth of construction projects of all kinds received building permits permits during the year. The previous year, 1986, saw a similar similar amount of activity, with $73 million million in construction occurring. Most of that building is taking place in the residential sector, where home construction is also at an all- time high. Last year, a grand total of 1,402 new residential dwellings were completed completed in the Town of Newcastle and in the previous year, there were 1,151. The reader may naturally wonder if this activity is continuing in the present year and the answer is in the affirmative. As of the end of April, the Town of Newcastle's building permit data revealed revealed that construction projects worth $51.6 million had received municipal municipal approvals. In other words, it would appear that the town's construction construction activity in the current year will certainly exceed the $100 million milestone and may, indeed, establish a new record. While there is unquestionably an active housing market in the Town of Newcastle, we should point out that there is also a significant increase in institutional construction activity as seen over the past two years. The town is not only increasing its population but is also putting in place the community facilities required to enhance the quality of life for those individuals who live here. Projects which come to mind include, include, of course, the new Town of Newcastle Administrative Centre which will be completed later this summer and which combines both renovation and new construction at the site of the historic Bowmanville Town Hall on Temperance St. Then, there's the new Bowmanville Bowmanville Arena which is under way on Highway 57. It will ensure ample skating and recreational facilities for future generations. Finally, we have under construction the Memorial Memorial Hospital addition and renovation project. This $15 million initiative will give the Town of Newcastle a progressive medical care facility in keeping with future expectations of growth and prosperity. We also note that two new educational educational facilities are nearing completion completion in the Courtice area. These include include the renovated and expanded Courtice West School and the new separate separate school. It should be noted, however, that the development of healthy communities is part of an ongoing, building process process which never really stops. This means that although we can take pride in the activities which have occurred to date, there remains more to be done.
