McD's Completes Successful Year McD's Billiard and Recreation Club of Bowmanville Bowmanville has beaten the odds. When word first got around last year that a recreation facility was opening up on King Street, many residents had visions of the stereotypical stereotypical "pool hall." Owner Bruce McDiar- mid shrugs off the word pool hall and quickly E oints out that there have een no major problems at the location since its August 1,1987 opening. 'We rule with an iron fist around here," he explains. explains. Fighting and swearing swearing are not permitted and repeat offenders are asked to leave and many are not allowed back to the recreation club for several months. What makes the club so special, according to Mr. McDiarmid, or Mr. McD as he is commonly called, is that it has truly become a family place. It isn't unusual to see an entire family setting up for a game of pool, or throwing some darts. Yet, the club is not all for recreation. A large part of the business is created through the sale of billiard tables and accessories accessories for home use. Mr. McDiarmid reports that since opening last August he has sold 50 tables. That number far exceeds his first year projections. He credits the large amount of sales with the growth of Bowmanville Bowmanville and area. Upcoming plans for the club include: creating creating a co-ed program at the Bowmanville High School that would incorporate incorporate the two basic factors factors of billiards -- physics physics and mathematics (or angles and velocity in the words of Mr. McDiarmid); McDiarmid); and a 3,000 square foot expansion of the building. Mr. McDiarmid also credits the success of the recreation facility to the people who go there. "I'm very pleased with the kids in town and their parents can be proud of the kids we deal with as well," states the owner. The large jar that stands on the front counter counter has been filled mainly mainly by the youngsters who come to the club. Eventually Eventually the money will be used to buy a wheelchair for a person who needs one. All Mr. McDiarmid asks is that everyone follows follows the rules and they don't get hassled. Whether it be a game of pool, video games or a quiet game of darts, McD's Billiard and Recreation Recreation Club has proven . it can be a success. Even against the odds.
