When Jimmy's novice hockey players entered the four day Checkers tournament tournament in Oshawa, they shared the dream of capturing capturing the "A" championship. With a lot of hard work, consistent consistent team effort and, yes, a little luck that dream became a reality when they were able to defeat four other novice novice teams. Game one took place on Tuesday, December 27th, against Oshawa 1 s Glen Stewart team. Jeremy Sanders Sanders started the team rolling by scoring on a breakaway early in the first period- Jimmy's Jimmy's continued their offensive offensive press, clearly dominating dominating the rest of this period and the next. However it wasn't until the '.last five .minutes , of the second period" that they- were able to get their second point onf Jimmy's keptithe scorekeeper busy. Since these two teams have been competing in house league all season, they knew that the game could go either way. However, with Jimmy's strong defensive lines which kept shots on goal to a minimum and goal- tender, Brandon Renton's timely saves, they were able to shut out the All Canadians. Final score of the game was 6-0 but it should be noted that these six goals were scored by five different players indicating that Jimmy's Jimmy's is not a one-man team! Brian Ball, assisted by Joel Osborne, got the initial goal of the game. Mike MacLeod MacLeod followed Brian's exam- . ,ple and scored a few minutes later. Score at the end of the . first period was 2-0. Thirty-five seconds into the next period, Jeremy .. Sanders parsed the puck to . Mark Ganhao, who had po- • sitioned himself in front of syhShet. Their goal tender, Jake Davis was determined to halt Jimmy's Jimmy's progress and made some excellent saves while his offensive lines continued to put Jimmy's defensemen to work. However, in the last few seconds of the game, Brian Ball scored his second goal with assistance from Wade Worsley and Joel Osborne. Osborne. Final score was 6-0. On Thursday, December 29th, Jimmy's played a semifinal semifinal game against a church league team sponsored by Holy Family. Tension was high as both- teams knew that a win would put one team in the finals where the trophies are awarded. As a result, this game turned out to be extremely fast paced. Midway into the opening period, Joel Osborne scored the all-important first goal, on a pass from Jamie Shrives. However, the Holy Family players were not going going to let this be a one-sided game and fought back to get on the scoreboard with a goal in the final minute of the first period. In the second period, the excitement escalated as the puck was worked from one end to the other. Jimmy's was again able to increase their goal lead when Derek Cummer, assisted by Brian Ball, scored his team's third goal. From this point on though, it looked as if the Holy Family goalie;; got his second wind, not Allowing any more pucks tfo jget past. Meanwhile, his teammates were able to score twice on breakaways. Score at the end of the second was 3-3. Both teams and spectators spectators knew that the next goal could decide the game. As a result, the arena became louder and play became more aggressive. In spite of frantic scrambles in front of the nets, neither team could score. Finally in the last four minutes of play, Wade "the heartbreaker" Worsley f ulled the plug on Holy amily when he scored the winning goal. Just to make sure that Jimmy's would win, with only 14 seconds left, Jeremy Sanders drove the puck past the Holy Family Family goalie to regain the two goal lead. Well deserved credit for assists go to Mike MacLeod and Joel Osborne. Final score was 5-3, which oualified Jimmy's to play in the "A" championship finals! While Jimmy's had been winning to qualify for the finals, finals, another Bowmanville team had been doing the same. Adam and Eve also eliminated three teams to qualify. The final "A" championship championship game between Jimmy's Jimmy's and Adam and Eve was scheduled for Friday, December December 30th. Before the game began, both teams lined up to shake hands and coaches wished each other luck. Smiles were apparent on all the novice players as they prepared to play their best against each other. It was clear that many friendships exist between these two teams. However, once the puck was dropped and the game was in progress, friendships or not, they were all there to play hockey. Spectators were treated to excellent hockey that included included passing and strong defense defense by both teams. Jimmy's, Jimmy's, early in the first period, was able to get on the board first when Brian Ball scored in a scramble in front of Adam & Eve's net. From that point on, Adam & Eve fought m ,iard to get that goal back while Jimmy's tried to increase increase their lead for a little margin of comfort. The play was moved from end to end and scoring opportunities were offered to Doth teams. However, that next goal seemed to be out of reach for both teams. Goal posts were hit, passes across the goal crease were fanned and timely saves were made by both goal tenders. The lack of many breakaways breakaways was a credit to the defensive defensive lines on both teams. Brad MacMaster of Jimmy's deserves special recognition for his contribution in this game. His timely poke- checks and presence along the boards had often stopped the Adam & Eve players from scoring. By tlje time the final buzzer buzzer sounded to end the "A" 'championship game, the sin- jgle Jiinmy s goal stood .alone. Well done team.
