Bowmanville, January IS. 1989 19 Birthdays for Brother and Sister HKBKH mÊÊM Hi folks! My name is Kevin Martin. I will be 4years old on April 8th. My little sister Rachel celebrated her First Birthday on January 5th, 1989. Letter to the Editor THAT OLD ARENA AGAIN This town needs some form of "trade centre" where interested parties (and the casual observer) can see for themselves what is already produced in the Town of Newcastle and, hopefully,, stimulate their interest sufficiently sufficiently to have them locate their operation here. It cannot cannot be done with a glossy brochure alone. After all this "town" consists of a number of smaller units situated miles apart. Many of the interesting interesting products of this town are produced in these "miles apart units". All of which discourages half interested interested parties from becoming becoming any further interested. As a matter of fact, from an aerial view of the Town of Newcastle, it would be hard to see it as a town at all. And there seems to be some sort of "Residential Mania" loose and at work here be it senior citizens or otherwise. There appears to be something something wrong with the balance. balance. A parking garage in the location of tne arena would only be a white elephant elephant and we don't need any elephants in the centre of Bowmanville. We rather like the suggestion suggestion of its use as a pleasure skating rink for use by individuals individuals and skating parties - and similar non-spectator ice sports. This is something sadly lacking in this community community and many others. The problem: To be practical, this amounts to about a four month use of this facility. However, since a Farmers Market is not very active, if at all, during these same four months, would it be possible to run it as a farmers market during the six or seven months of non-skating weather? And at the same time, on a year round basis, there should be quite a lot of space available for use as a display/trade display/trade centre. Since this is to be for non-spectator sports most of the seating could be taken out. Possibly the size of the ice surface could be reduced somewhat? Maybe make a lay-out similar similar to that of the coliseum at the C.N.E? But then again, any at-, tempt to combine these three elements could be a disaster. Maybe two but not three. The public skating would seem to be the one with the least potential since, at best, it would be only a four month operation. And with the general general public's general preference preference to be entertained rather than entertain themselves, this element becomes a little iffy. Without the skating element, element, if the other activities become less than popular the facility can be more or less closed down in these winter months. But with a well managed and advertised (No sour grapes) St. Lawrence Lawrence style market, this might not be necessary. We think the old arena would better serve the town as some form of just such a centre - at least for starters. If, after a reasonable second second look at this, any or all of it proves to be impractical, we are sure somebody in town has a paper shredder that will let you run this through it. Frank Crowe. Council Briefs On Monday, Council approved approved a motion to allot $200 to Citizens for a Safe Environment Environment so they can organize organize activities during National National Environment Week, June 4 to 10,1989. The group expects to receive receive matching funds from Environment Canada, for a total of $400 and hopes to raise awareness about the environment focusing on the theme of the week: "Our common future - its up to all of us." Council also approved increases increases in the honorariums paid to Newcastle Hydro Commissioners. Commissioners Commissioners will receive $1,760 per year retroactive to December December 1, 1988. This is up from $1,675, a 4.8 percent increase. increase. The chairman will be paid $2,500 which is a 26 percent increase from $1,990. Mayor Marie Hubbard, Hubbard, Council's representative representative on the Hydro Commission, Commission, said that the Commission had examined the average honorarium of similar commissioners in the Region and arrived at these figures. "It's not a lot of money money for the work they do," she stated, Deputy Treasurer Marie Marnno was elevated to Acting Acting Treasurer on Monday by a unanimous vote of Council.
