January 18.1989 Darlington Auto Selects Split Early Week Games On Monday, Jan. 2, the Darlington Auto Atom Selects absorbed their first loss of the season to a hard working Oshawa Park League Select team. When the final buzzer had sounded, the scoreboard read 2 - 1 for the Oshawa squad. This loss was a combination combination of a very tight checking, hard working Oshawa team not allowing the Darlington Auto boys any good chances, coupled with the inability of the boys to hit the open man with a quality pass. But.asthcsayinggocs, if you win as a team you also lose as one too, so no one individual can be faulted for this defeat. Anyhow, on to the game. In the first period, Oshawa drew first blood on a backhander from a scramble scramble in front of Stevie Sargent Sargent at the 2:22 mark. It remained remained such till Les McCrory backhanded one in of his own at 8:25 of the 3rd period, unassisted. Oshawa popped the winner by Clayton Rcndell, again on a scramble in front to close out the scoring and the game at the 7:59 mark of the third. Final score 2 - 1 for Oshawa. The next night the Darlington Darlington Auto Selects had a chance to redeem themselves themselves and skated to a hard- fought 3 - 2 win. Their journey journey look them to the unfriendly unfriendly confines of Harmon Harmon Park in Oshawa, having played the previous night at Donovan. This match was a reversal of form from the game the night before with the Darlington Darlington Auto boys coming out on lop of the score by a one goal margin. The first period was scoreless but featured sparkling saves at either end of the ice, Clayton Re- ndell holding the fort for the Darlington Auto boys in the second period. Les McCrory finished off a three on one break, assisted by Mike Ferguson. Jeff Hughes upped the count to 2 - 0, firing firing one in high over the shoulder after taking a pass in the slot from Les McCrory and Mike Ferguson. Oshawa then replied near the end of the second period to leave the score at the end of the second at 2 - 1 for the Darlington Auto Selects. In the 3rd period each team traded goals for a final score of 3 - 2 for the Darlington Darlington Auto Selects. Notching Notching the final goal was Ryan Branningan from Mike Ferguson Ferguson and Les McCrory. On Sunday, Jan. 8 the Darlington Darlington Auto Atom Selects were at home to a Select representative from Union- ville. This game was highlighted highlighted by several dubious calls that went against the Darlington Auto team in the crucial final minutes that would not allow our guys back into the game, the final score reading 3 - 2 Union- ville. Midway through the first period, Darlington Auto found itself two men short and this proved too much against a short-staffed Stevie Sargent and company company with Unionville pushing pushing one across at the 6:04 mark. It remained such until the 8:00 mark of the second when Unionville notched its second goal with the teams icing four skaters each. Finally, at the one second mark of the second Aaron Stoker pushed one across from David Chambers Chambers to get us back in the game. Then at the 11:49 mark of the 3rd, Jeff Hughes scored unassisted on a steal inside the opposition's zone to knot the score at 2 - 2. This gave Clayton Rendell, who had replaced Stevie to start the 3rd, and the rest of the boys, a glimmer of hope that we could cap a promising comeback with a go ahead goal but such was not the case. We ran into a rash of late period penalties and Unionville fired the eventual eventual winner in at the 4:18 mark on a power play to close out the scoring. Let's hope that in the upcoming upcoming games we can keep relatively clear of the penally penally box so as to give Clayton Rcndell and Steven Sargent all the support they deserve. deserve. iLets the Sunshine in v ' -va .v t* w,/ - , pilgl I ^ jggpï.
