January 25,1989 New Horizons Could Help Rotary Project Breathe Free Plan Starts in February Bowmanville Rotarians heard from Cameron Kenny of New Horizons last Thursday at their weekly meeting. Joining Mr. Kenny on the left is club president president Don Welsh and on the right, Rotarian A1 Witherspoon. by Chris Clark The Bowmanville Rotary Club's dream of a senior citizens' citizens' recreation centre is one stepcloser to reality. The speaker at last Thursday's Thursday's club meeting was Cameron Kenny, a representative representative from New Horizons, a federal government program program which funds senior citizen citizen projects. He described the purpose of the program and how it might benefit the Rotary project. Before Mr. Kenny spoke, Rotarian A1 Witherspoon reported reported the results of a survey the club conducted to determine determine the needs in the community community for such a centre. The overwhelming response from the 160 replies was in favour of the project. With that in mind the Rotarians, who gathered this week at' the Port Darlington Marina^ listened attentively as Mr. Kenny outlined some of the steps involved in receiving a New Horizons grant. Under the auspices of the federal Ministry of Health and Welfare, New Horizons provides start-up money for seniors' projects across the country. The maximum grant is $50,000 but Mr. Kenny Kenny reported that he has awarded grants of as little as $600. "The funds are designed to help over an 18-montn period period and the group is expected expected to be self-sufficient by that time," he explained. National Non-smoking Week was observed across Canada during the middle week of January. The facts about smoking's harmful effects effects are now common knowledge and virtually unchallenged unchallenged even by smokers. Smoking is the leading cause of cancer. As well, 14,000 Canadians die each year from heart attacks brought about by smoking. Unfortunately, the average age when people start smoking smoking is falling, even as the percentage percentage of smokers in society society shnnks. Beginning on Tuesday, February 7, the Breathe-Free Program will commence at Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville. Bowmanville. Many people have found the program of great assistance in breaking their smoking habit. they hope to receive help from New Horizons. Invited to hear about plans for the centre was the entire Newcastle Town Council. All but Diane Ham- re and Ken Hooper, however, however, had prior commitments and could not attend. Councillor Councillor Hamre expressed the thanks of all councillors saying, saying, "all of council would be here if they could be." The Bowmanville Lawn Bowling Club recently received received a $32,000 grant from New Horizons to make im- rovements to their club- ouse and facilities. C.S.S. News by Lisa Scattergood; Now that the Christmas holidays are over, the exams crept up quickly. They started started January 19 and will be finished by January 27th. These exams are a lot like the mid-terms except there are exemptions. A student does not have to write the final final in a subject if he has fewer fewer than ten absences, an average average of 66% or higher, has written the mid-term, and has not been a problem in class. There are some people who will be fortunate enough to not have to write any exams. A 15-year smoker, Conrad Conrad Grol, reports that he hasn't had a cigarette since January 17 of 1988. "I feel great," he exclaimed, "the support of being with other people really helped." Faye Jones, a smoker for 25 years, also found the program program to be very helpful. She, too, is thrilled finally to have kicked the habit. "I can breathe easier skiing or walking," she said. We started the New Year off with a real good turnout of our regular diners and a host of new faces which we were very pleased to see at our lunches. At this time I would like to say Thank You to all who supported us in 1988 and we are looking forward to a good year in 1989 and hope to give all you nice people good food and good service. We served about 80 people. At 12 O'clock everyone lined up for lunch which consisted of hot meat and potato pies, tea biscuits, cake topped with whipped cream ana tea.
