Goodyear Eagles Battle To Tie Uxbridge Bruins ; This week was lean pickings pickings for the Bowmanville Jr. ' C's. A loss to Port Perry and a tie at home against Ux- ■ bridge earned them only one . point in the standings. Sever- • al experienced players were missing from the Sunday night line-up but those in uniform gave a good effort. The Bruins got on the sheet first with a power play marker near the end of the initial period. Chris Shmyr put the Eagles on the board also as a result of a power- play with Goode and Dennis getting the assists. The Bruins went ahead again mid-way through the second' but once again Shymr scored the equalizer from Nick Dennis. Uxbridge's third goal was a power play effort only to have Stainton tie it for the Eagles from Noble Noble and Goode. Goode scored the Eagles' last goal on the power play from Baum- nauer and Noble but the' Bruins notched the equalizer with 5 minutes remaining. Bunker was steady in the nets. Once again the Campbell- Pithie-Shmyr line dominated the scoring in the Scugog Arena against the Mojacks. Costly give-aways at the beginning beginning of the game gave Port Perry two breakaways in the first five minutes. The first eluded goal tender Webster Webster to give the Mojacks a 1-0 lead but he came up big on the next one. With one minute minute remaining, Pithie and Shmyr sent Campbell in for SPORTS Clippers Down Bowmanville on Young Canada Day Elizabeth Manley's Brother Won't Settle for Second Place GOODYEAR FAN APPRECIATION NIGHT --This Sun- day, February 5, will be Goodyear Fan Appreciation Night at the Bowmanvillc Recreation Centre. The world's top hockey players faced off for the La- batt's Annual Backyard Championships on Saturday at the Strike's Beech Avenue Ice Palace. Despite melting ice conditions, spectators were treated to a fine display of brilliant backyard play throughout the day. Exceptionally brilliant were the six players seated in the above photo. From the left are Nick Net Defender, chosen as the best goaltender of the tournament. tournament. Next to him is Schultz Souliers-blancs, deemed to be the player who displayed the greatest ef- Strong Showing by Ontario Hydro Atoms a shot on net and the half speed shot missfired, and slipped in to tie the score. Glen opened the scoring in the second from Shawn Rekker and George Pithie to give the Eagles the lead. With excellent puck control in the Bowmanville zone the boys from Port scored three goals in the second to go to the dressing room with a 4-2 lead. Chris Shymr opened the third on a persistent effort from Campbell and Pithie, only to have the Mojacks regain regain their lead on a nifty two man effort in front of the net. Glen kept the Goodyear boys in there with a power play goal from Pithie and Shmyr. Once again a costly give-away resulted in a break-away to give Port the insurance marker and a 6-4 victory. If the boys stick to hockey, employ a close checking strategy and move the puck ahead faster to prevent prevent give-aways by the defense defense we can beat Port Perry. Let's hope this can happen the next game we play them. Wing Tips Full credit must go to Campbell, Pithie and Shmyr. They are always on the move and seem to know what each other is going to do - I guess you call that communication and it seems to me there is a lack of communication communication throughout the entire team. The players of the Atom team sponsored by the Ontario Ontario Hydro Employees' Union should be proud of their accomplishment accomplishment in the annual Bowmanville tournament on Saturday, January 28th.' During this one day event, the Employees' Union hockey hockey players met and defeated two Oshawa teams to qualify qualify for the "A" championship game. The first match was scheduled for 10:00 a.m. but most team members arrived early for pre-game advice from coach Rick Powell and assistants Dave Cook, Bill Thrasher, and Lloyd Barr. Facing off against Notre Dame, a team they've met in exhibition games, they knew their opponents strengths and weaknesses and adjusted adjusted their strategy accordingly. accordingly. This resulted in five goals being scored by Employee Union players and a well- deserved shutout for their goalie, Jeff Crawford. Jason Barr accounted for the first goal in the last three minutes of the opening period. period. This was the result of a well timed pass from Travis Lauglin. Travis also supplied Kevin Kevin Martin with tne puck at the light time to lead to j»oal play moved from end to end but no goals were allowed until the 3:17 mark. At that late point, Kevin Martin put the scorekeeper to work when he used a pass from Jeff Crawford to fool the St. Andrew's netminder. Period two was also a single single goal period. Unfortunately Unfortunately for Hydro players, it was scored against them when the St. Andrew's team captain captain got a breakaway. Going into the third period period with a tie, both teams came out determined to get the next goal. However, it appeared as if Hydro's Travis Travis Laughlin had more deter- ; mination himself than the whole St. Andrew's team. After After eight minutes of play that had fans for both teams jumping from their seats, Travis broke loose to. break' the tie. Before the period was finished, Travis repeated his act twice more to earn the first hat-trick of the tournament. tournament. With a final score of 4-1, the Hydro Employee's Union team earned the right to play in the "A" champion- number two in the middle of the second period. However, even with the excellent passing passing and consistent fore- checking, the Hydro Union players could not produce more than one goal per period. period. The third period continued continued at the same fast pace that further tested both goalies. goalies. Early in the period, the team captain, Gary Munn scored the first goal in a three goal period. (Gary had been selected team captain for his outstanding effort in the previous house-league game.) Jason Geurts scored the next goal midway through the period. Assists go to Chris Jay and Ryan Branigan. Finally, with only five seconds left, Travis Laughlin scored the last Hydro Hydro goal on a breakaway. Hydro now moved on in the "A" championship. The next game was against St. Andrew's of Oshawa. This team had defeated defeated another Bowmanville team with a score of 12-0 so the Hydro Union players knew that a great challenge faced them. Jason Barr, who played right-wing in the first game, moved back to his usual position position between the pipes. Again the goalies for both teams were tested as the ship game. That final championship game turned out to be against another Bowmanville Bowmanville team, Hutton Transport. Transport. Hydro fans were wondering wondering if they were going to witness history repeating itself itself since, only a month ago, these two clubs faced off against each other in the final final "A" championship game in the Oshawa Checker's Tournament. In that game, Hydro had been virtually shut down, scoring only one goal. The Hydro Union players were determined not to be shut out this game! Howev er, by the end of the first period period it appeared as if that might happen since Hydro's lone goal bv Travis Laughlin was overshadowed by four Hutton goals. Going into the second period period behind three goals, some teams might give up. Instead, the Hydro Union players demonstrated their ability to dig deeper and work harder in the face of adversity. If the first period had been Hutton's, the second second period clearly belonged to the Hydro Union players. Kevin Martin and Travis Laughlin each scored in this period to narrow the gap on ' the scorébiiard.' Meanwhile, solid defense supplied by Phil Gushalak, Jeff Thrasher, Thrasher, JasOn Geurts, Kyle Shackleton, Jamie Powell and Jeff Crawford coupled with superb goaltending by Jason Barr lea to the frustration frustration of Hutton's goal scorers. At the 10:38 mark of the third period, the fans of the Hydro Employees' Union team went wild! At that oint, Travis Laughlin got is second hat trick of the tournament and, more importantly, importantly, the tieing goal of the game. For the next four minutes, both teams moved the puck faster and the aggressiveness aggressiveness of the game escalated. escalated. Unfortunately for Hydro, at the 6:48 point Hutton Hutton Transport finally broke through the Hydro defense. One minute later, Hydro Union Union players found themselves themselves behind 6-4. With only thirty seconds left in the game, Kevin Martin Martin answered one of the Hutton Hutton goals to bring the game to 6-5.
