The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, February 8. 1989 15 40th Wadding An n iversary Handling It... Lloyd Scott Love is a decision, not just a feeling. Loving behavior flows from the choice one makes to be loving. Those good words, "I love you", have lost their meaning meaning through repetition, and arc no longer invested with much magical power. Saying Saying tliem and hearing them don't necessarily lead to believing believing them. They're often spoken out of duty. "I love you" comes easily during the falling-in-love period. Then, «the ■ words carry a promise of forever. When we're "in love" we gel addicted to that high. But highs don't last. Honeymoons Honeymoons end and we come clown to earth. That's when many couples start to struggle with their marriages because because they think that when the feeling is gone, the love is gone. So, the marriage must also he over. When we misunderstand love, we misunderstand marriage. Lasting love develops when the early feelings of infatuation are gone. Then love becomes the response to a decision, not just the expression expression of a feeling. Love is the decision to befriend someone for what we can give to them, not just for what we can get from them. It's a choice, made while conscious and wideawake wideawake and not under the influence influence of some powerful drug such as romance, to befriend, not to control, manipulate or use. Fun doesn't necessarily end when romance does. It can increase. A loving relationship relationship means good times, not just hard work. Married love is wanting the same good things for your partner that you want for yourself. This definition takes love beyond the level of feelings. Furthermore, to recognize that our partners have needs and wants and dreams that arc different from ours but that arc still worthy of respect, helps us to work toward fulfilling them, just as we would work toward fulfilling our own. The choice to he loving toward toward one's married partner leads to personal growth. Growing and changing together together helps marriages work, just as marriages end because one spouse has outgrown outgrown the other. By learning learning new things, meeting new people, experiencing new life, individuals stay interesting interesting in themselves and interesting to their mates. Being interesting and interested interested means that we don't fall in love just once. We keep falling in love for years. The decision to love leads also to commitment and to good communication. Successful Successful couples find solutions solutions to their problems, not ways to escape from one another. From the decision to love flows acceptance of our partners with gratitude, instead instead of rejection of them because they don't fit some romantic ideal of what we sometimes imagine they should he. Love is too important to he left to the uncertain rise and fall of feelings. They come and go, strong one minute, minute, weak the next. Whereas the decision to love, which is the basis for learning to be more loving, gives our partners much more that the mere words, "I love you." Loving behavior behavior towards one's married married partner is its own reward. reward.
