There was a handsome sum in donations received for the new curtains to provide means of darkening the room for slide showing. It was a happy time, besides the fun of playing together there were generous prizes. Some of the fortunate players were: Arnold Thorn- dyke and Murray Payne tied for men's first. Margaret Peters, Georgina Georgina Fenton, and Margaret Todd all shared in ladies' prizes. Bernice Best was celebrating celebrating her birthday and received a prize for that while Gwen Best was the lucky lone hand winner. On Saturday evening, February 4th, Murray and Jean - Payne entertained family and friends at a farewell farewell party for Keith and Ruth Caswell who are leaving leaving in the, near future for a tour of Australia. Garfield and Iva Payne are taking a trip to Australia also, but not till April. Beside these two couples, present were Brian and Mary Caswell, Shelley and Joe Renaud and Harold and Gwen Best. On Saturday Loraa Edgerton, Helen Green, Elaine Bailey and Helen Nesbitt enjoyed a day of curling in the Ethel Inglis Hilltop Hereford Curling Bonspiel at Omemee Curling Rink. On Friday Jennifer Fletcher, Nicole Leach, Jill VanCamp and Esther Kelly participated in the LOSSA Curling Bonspiel at Port Perry Curling Club. Their coach Mr. Scott was pleased with their efforts. Plans are underway for the annual annual Fletcher Memorial Mixed Bonspiel which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the local rink. The new 4H unit from Fleece to Wool will begin Thursday, Feb. 9 7-9 p.m. at Blackstock United Church. This club is open for anyone 11-21 years of age as of January 1, 1989. (Please note change of age.) During this project project the members will have a guest from a local sheep farm, see spinning, and hopefully will visit a local fur knitter. We will begin knitting on Thursday night so please bring knitting needles size number4.5,5or5.5mmand some scraps of Sayelle yarn. Word has been received of the passing of Charlie McLaughlin who is a cousin of many area residents. Mr. McLaughlin had often visited the area and was greatly esteemed. He was 98 years old and lived in Toronto. On Saturday evening Jack and Marsha Massie, Gerald and Joyce Kelly along with C.C.P.S. Principal Roden and Carol Rutledge attended the Retirement Retirement Dinner and Dance in honour of Retiring Director Education of Durham Board of Education Bruce Mather. A well known former Newcastle area couple, Charles and Helen Glenney, were honored Jan. 25th as Lindsay's "Citizens of the Year 1988" by the Chamber of Commerce. The citation listed them as ambassadors of goodwill goodwill for their community involvement with the Cancer Society, the Ross Memorial Hospital, the Canadian Club, Sir Sandford Fleming students and others. We regretfully accepted our organist's resignation, effective March 5 -1989. Mr. Metcalf has accepted a position position with a Whitby church. Mr. Ed Millson read out the list of courtesies. Several items of business were completed and meeting closed with prayer, 13 ladies of unit #1, met Wednesday afternoon in Main hall of church for their monthly meeting. The committee committee in charge wore Vera Staples, Doris Wannan and Barbara Hannah. The theme of devotions was "Valentine's "Valentine's Day on Love". Several Several readings, poems were enjoyed by all. Several items of business were discussed and the meeting closed with a tasty lunch. Collector's Fair Many antique lovers from Orono, attended the "Collectors "Collectors Fair" and "Tales of Yesteryear", Yesteryear", held in Newcastle Community hall, on Sunday, February 5. The displays in general were all excellent, and of particular interest to this writer, was the very attractive attractive table of Carnival ware, displayed by Mrs. Eira Duvall, Orono. Being a collector collector of same, this one took my eye! The pretty cookie jars (Jose) and the cocoa pots (Mabel Goode) were excellent. excellent.
