It's Thursday, January 26th and all school buses in Durham Region are cancelled cancelled due to freezing rain. This means an unexpected holiday for "schoolbus kids" and the cancellation of all my classes scheduled for today. Finally, I now have some time to resume my. articles articles for 1989.- t,'-' While driving to one of my classes the other day I decided to do an impromptu , survey. At every stop light I looked around to see how many drivers were wearing their seat belts. Results Results No more than. 50 per cent are taking advantage ^ , this proven safety .device. •. Being a person who- •al-'«" ways wears a seatbelt I.find-.$ it disappointing to see such a large number of people not . bothering to use them. Do they not believe the studies that show that seat belts reduce reduce the risk of injury or death in an accident by 50%? Has it not been sufficiently sufficiently proved to them that if you are properly buckled in, with both lap and shoulder shoulder belts, you could walk away from accidents that otherwise would be fatal? It really is true that severe severe injury or death often result when you are thrown out of the car in an accident. I recall investigating a rollover rollover type accident a number of years ago where the driver driver was thrown from the vehicle vehicle and . died instantly from a broken neck. When I checked his vehicle I noted that the interior of the vehicle vehicle had suffered very little damage. It would have been obvious to anyone viewing that vehicle that if the driver driver had been wearing his seatbelt he would have probably probably escaped with little or no injury. It is a fact that if you stay inside the vehicle you have a much better chance of surviving surviving an accident and seat belts are the best single method for keeping you in the car. An argument put forward by many people who do not wear seatbelts is that they don't want to be trapped in the car. But, the facts are that fire or submersion submersion in water are rare in accidents. accidents. Seat belts keep you conscious and uninjured, enabling you to get free of the car. Seat belts can even prevent serious collisions by keeping the driver behind the wheel and in control of the car whilst coping with . an emergency situation. Unbelted occupants can also seriously injure fellow ! passengers by striking or crushing them against the car in a collision especially small children. A major source of injuiy in accidents is caused by your head or body striking the car's interior. interior. When your car hits something solid it stops moving. But, you continue moving until you hit something something solid. It could be the steering wheel, windshield, or dashboard. This "human, collision" often can result in serious injury. Seat belts, especially especially shoulder belts, reduce reduce this impact or prevent it altogether. In Ontario we have laws that require everyone to wear a seatbelt when travelling travelling in most types of vehicles. vehicles. But drivers should also be aware that they are responsible responsible for the seat belt/ child restraint use of any children under 16 years of age riding in the vehicle. This time the "Hornets", "Hornets", as they've come to be known due to their yellow and black uniforms, headed to Bobcaygeon's Tri-Novice tournament. The hosts should be congratulated for a superbly organized event that brought eight teams together together for competition, served hot lunches to all players and even scheduled feature-length movies to fill between-game time. Jimmys players faced-off against a team from Sutton. Brandon Renton filled his usual place between the pipes for his team while coach, Gary Ball, shuffled the rest of the players around. Whatever the reason reason behind the changes, it certainly paid off as the Hornets Hornets were able to accumulate accumulate five goals while Sutton scored only once. EWWSg uy o Mike MacLeod put the Hornets on the scoreboard first, midway in the opening period. However, Sutton came back 40 seconds later to tie the game. It was clear that both teams wanted to advance in the "A" championship championship as the pace quickened quickened and the offensive lines pressed harder. At the 2:10 mark of the same period, Brian Ball doubled the Hornet's Hornet's goal count when Brad Johnson fed him the puck. Score at the end of the first was 2-1 for Jimmy's Hornets. Hornets. Period two was filled with end to end hockey that had fans for both teams jumping from their seats. Joel Osborne deserves special recognition for his efforts efforts in the game. While Joel did not manage to score on the Sutton, ygoaltender, his constant barrage of shots and his physical presence on the ice was certainly an intimidating intimidating force to contend with. He was definitely an asset in that game. The next game saw the Hornets facing an Omemee team. Coach Gary Ball, after after consulting his assistants! Jim McMaster and Bruce Osborne, returned the players to their regular lines. Throughout the game, the Hornet's solid defensive lines kept the shots-on-goal to a minimum. Add to this, Brandon Renton's quick net- minding reflexes and the team had the combination to earn a shutout. Mike MacLeod again started the scoring for Jimmy's Jimmy's in the first period, this time using the assistance of a pass from Brad MacMas- ter. Brian Ball followed suit less than a minute later and finally, Mark Ganhao made it a 3-0 period when Wade Worsley supplied him with the puck in the slot. In periods two and three, the defensive lines for both teams tightened up and the scoreboard appeared stuck. No goals were registered for the second period and it wasn't until the last minute of the third that the drought was ended. At that point, Wade Worsley who played a strong and aggressive game, drove the puck past the Omemee Omemee goalie. In that earlier game, the Lindsay team won with a score of 6-0. However, all six goals were scored by one player wearing number nine. The Hornets then knew that "number nine" could inflict a lot of damage on a team-and that is exactly exactly what happened! Only it was number nine on Jimmy's Jimmy's Hornets! Brian Ball, wearing that number, had managed to score a total of five goals during the "A" championship game.
