The Goodyear Eagles were going strong on Sunday night against the Little Britain Merchants who at the start appeared somewhat chippy, but ineffective as the Eagles piled up a three goal lead in the early go- On the strength of their victories last weekend over Lakefield (in Lakefield), and Little Britain (at home), the Bowmanville Goodyear Jr. C's slipped back into second place as the league winds down. The local boys travelled to the unfriendly confines of the Lakefield arena last Friday Friday and skated away with a 7-5 victory. Scott Webster came up with some big saves when they were needed which inspired the skaters to their best efforts. Lakefield opened the scoring midway through the first period, but George Pi- thie evened the score with three minutes remaining on a set-up by Chris Shmyr and Shawn Rekker. Two minutes into the second second frame the Chiefs took the lead and extended it to two at the 11:00 minute mark "on a power play. Shane Armstrong gave the Eagles the lead seven minutes into the third from Gallant and Dennis. The Goodyear boys extended their margin to two when Mark Tripp converted his hat truck from Merkac and Rekker. With 10 minutes remaining, remaining, Lakefield moved within one, but a persisten- teffort by the Eagles enabled Dean Baumhauer to pound home the clincher witn four minutes remaining, on the power play The Bowmanville Bowmanville boys managed to kill off a penmlty and salvage their 7-5 win. How sweet it was, says John Hartford CASTLE HOTEL 55 King St. E. Bowmanville 623-7072 BUSTER'S Roadhouse and Tavern 45 King St. W., Newcastle 987-4442 ing. Here, a shot from left just misses the visitors' net, but Capt. Kelly Armstrong, behind the net, is heading for the puck as the goalie and defencemen sense the threat that is coming. Sunday night saw the hard-skating, aggressive Little Little Britain Merchants at the Complex. The red, white and black Eagles charged to an early 3-0 lead on goals by Nick Dennis (Shane Armstrong Armstrong and Flintoff), Shane Armstrong (Nick Dennis) and Glen Campbell (Shane and George Pithie) on the power play. Little Britain opened the scoring in the second just 29 seconds into the period. The two teams then skated hard and checked closely, not allowing allowing each other any good scoring chances. Brian Noble netted two in the third, the first from Nick Dennis and the second from Stainton and Baumhauer to. widen the lead to 5-1. The Merchants were not about to give up as they scored twice within one minuste to narrow narrow the margin. Within the last two minutes. Dennis scored his second from Noble Noble and Mark Tripp pulled the trigger from Snane and Greg Markac. Thus the Merchants' Merchants' shopping trip was in vain as they lost 7-3. Wing Tips: It seems that penalties played a big part in the Eagles' success as they only took four which left them shorthanded in Lakefield and five at home against Little Britain. In spite of the fact that Bowmanville Bowmanville has a good penalty killing system, it still messes messes up the line combinations. Another asset for the Eagles Eagles lately is the goal pro-' duction of all lines and a variety variety of players. If this balanced offense can continue continue we will be a threat to anyone in the playoffs. We have two good aggressive aggressive goaltenders who like to challenge the shooters and can come up with key saves when necessary. Over the last two games the defense have played well in their own end and not got caught up ice. Pee Wee Selects Win 6 B' Title In Heritage Tournament The I.O.O.F. Then, with 6:24 remaining remaining in the game, TJ Johnston Johnston clinched the victory as she picked up a pass from Leanne Floyd and skated into enemy territory with only one thing in mind - (Don't blow it!) and she didn't. She very adeptly put her accurate shot in the bottom bottom corner of the stick side.
