Ms. Bell, president of Big Sisters' board of directors, told members of council the grant would go toward increasing increasing public awareness in this area by possibly sharing an office witn another agency agency in the town. A local office would give the group a higher profile. Currently there are five matches in this area and two Little Sisters are on a waiting list. Ms. Lowry Bell said, however, that she felt the matches don't reflect the need in the community. Mr. Bonnell, from the non-competitive softball league, requested a grant because of the increase in membership and the need for new equipment. The age of the children playing in the league ranges from four to 14. He said in 1988 there were 130 children children in the league, an increase increase of 90 players over the number in 1987. 155 Years of Community Service ^Anglican (Etjnrclf Temperance Street, Bowmanville, Ontario SUNDAY, MARCH 5TH, 1989 LENT IV 8:00 a.m. Holy Communion 11:00 a.m. Holy Communion Rector -- The Reverend Byron Yates B.A., S.T.B. Special Week for Scouts and Guides ™ . .... . v r t-L.^..mum w.nVn « c-rv-»oil zliPCnr'nrsna in by Karen Thompson The week of February 19th thru 26th marked a very important event for Guiding and Scouting all over the world. This is Scout/Guide Week. At this time, both organizations celebrate celebrate the birthdays of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell, our founders. Many members wore their uniforms on February February 22nd to remind them and pay respect to both these brilliant people. Many of the units had special meetings during this. week to give the girls some idea of Guiding in other parts of the world. Lady Baden-Powell once said, "If you cannot visit sister sister Guides in France or Finland, in Australia or Austria, in Italy or Iceland...you Iceland...you can reach out to them there in your mind. And in this unseen, spiritual Guides Sing Songs At Nursing Home way you can give thorn your uplifting sympathy and friendship. Thus do we Guides, of all kinds and of all ages and of all nations, § o with the highest and the est towards the spreading of true peace, and goodwill on earth." She taught the girls to believe in their Promise and Laws and make the world a better place by following these. The same Promise and Laws are used today and the girls of today strive to follow them and try to make a small difference in the world around them. Each small step is one step closer to learning to live in the world today and making a difference. ' On Sunday, February 26th, all the Guiding and Scouting units, attended a special service held at the Salvation Army Citadel. This was done to honour our founder and keep the spirit of Guiding and Scouting Scouting amongst each and every boy and girl in the organization organization in Bowmanville. Some of the seniors told their favorite songs and we all sang them too. Then we gave out cards that we had made to the resident resident of our choice. Next we had some Valentine treats. We all helped hand out the food and drinks. The Guides had some too. After the treats, everyone sat and listened listened to a story about St. Valentine which was told by Monica Brown, Trinda Cook- son and Rebecca Vatcher. When they were finished, we gave home-made roses in little glass vases to the residents, residents, They liked them a lot! We closed the evening with "Taps" and all was well.
