I Section Two 4 The Canadian Statesman. Boxvmanvillc. March 22.1989 Apple Grower Speaks to Maple Grove W.I. Recently Mr. Kirk Kemp, a local grower spoke on the management. management. upkeep, spraying and marketing of apples. He said the first 4 years can make or break your apple business. You need to know the right variety of apples to plant for the soil of your land. As well you need to know what place the market trend is going. Pruning takes about four months in the winter to shape the trees. X Spraying has to be done at the proper time. Then there is summer pruning to cut out new shoots and to get rid of misshapen misshapen fruit. Our area is ideal for apple apple growing with cool crisp nights to produce a firm, sweet apple with plenty of colour. Kirk said that knowing the proper time to market your produce can mean more profit for the grower. The Kemps go to the Farmer's Market at Oshawa and Peterborough. People arent afraid to tell you what they like about your product. Looks and taste are important. Kirk very capably answered answered several questions from the members. Mrs. Wm. Polak, convenor convenor for Agriculture introduced introduced Mr. Kemp and thanked him on behalf of all present. Mrs. G. Besse, commented commented on the Motto 'One bad apple apple in the bushel can spoil them all.' She said many years ago a barrel of apples could be bought for 25 cents, which is hard to believe. Apples used to be kept in the basement and would last till spring for there were no furnaces then. As spring neared the apples were sorted sorted and the baa ones given to the pigs. However if the apples apples were not checked often, one bad one could in time spoil the whole lot. Today's apples get the best of care and with cold storage will last till the new crop comes. People are the same. Young people want to be one of the crowd but if they get in with the wrong crowd, they can end up like the prodigal son. So the worm in the apple can be likened to our young people, some are baa and can bring harm to the good ones. Mrs. H. Bradley, Pres, was in charge of the business business period. The Roll Call was "Name a new variety of apples and tell your favourite apple recipe." recipe." Mrs. R. Bubar reported for the 'Good Neighbours' committee. Mrs. R. Metcalf, District Director gave a report report of the District Executive Executive Meeting. The Roll Call will be a suggestion to improve or to have at a District Annual. The District Annual will be held at Nestleton on May 18th/89. A resolution from Bow- manville W.I. as regards a Founders Day to be held in February to commemorate founding of W.I. was read. Mrs. S. Found agreed to help Mrs. B. Burke on the Auditors committee. It was decided to leave our groups the same for next year with the fees remaining at $5. It was agreed to have a special collection in May for A.G.W.W. in the amount of each giving the price of a loafofbread. It was decided to again have a booth at Courtice Flea Market on June 3rd with home baking. Mrs. B. Burke, Mrs.-Wm. Polak and Mrs. A. Hall agreed to organize the sale. Collection and Pennies for Friendship were taken. The meeting opened with the singing of the Ode and repeating of the Lord's Prayer and closed with the repeating of the Collect. Mrs. Polak and her group served several apple desserts desserts with whipped cream, ice cream, tea ana coffee. The Annual Meeting will be on April 10 th when the Roll Call will be - Program suggestions for next year and Pay your dues. Wm. Brown Press Sect. 623-2610. Business Directory ACCOUNTANCY WILLIAM C.
