March 22.1989 7 Ken Hockin Oldtimers Manage Win and Tie in Recent Games byB Bowmanvillc 2 Newcastle 2 Art Hester and Leo Kelly, the goal tenders in this game were outstanding as they held opposition marksmen to only two goals each. It was not until the second period period that Bosak hit Don Roote with a breakaway pass through centre that caught the Bowmanville defence defence flat-footed. Roote raced in and drilled a shot through the five hole as Art Hester spread eagled, anticipating anticipating a shot to tne comer. Ed Schreyer then came up with two super efforts," first of all setting up Bob Tugwood with a perfect pass in the crease ana then making making a solo end to end rush and beating Leo Kelly with a perfect drive inside the far post. Bob Stiles mode the save of the game. With Leo Kelly down and out, Ron Clemens gave Bob Sheridan a pass directly directly in front. This usually reliable marksman drilled the puck along the ice at the very centre of the net. Stiles with a superhuman effort raced across and caught the puck on his skate. In the dying dying moments of the contest it was again the heroic figure figure of Bob Stiles who took a pass from Roote in the slot and scored the tying goal. George Sainsbury, playing playing for Newcastle against his erstwhile mates, was checked very closely, especially especially by the ferocious efforts of that whirling dirvish, Ron Clemens. Tony Jones, who had a chance to score the winner in the contest, was caught from behind and hooked by Grant Flintoff, who drew the only penalty of the game. A solid defensive defensive effort was put in by the rest of the Bowmanville team, Ron Rushak, Sjoerd List, Hugh German, Bob Hell am, and Warren Town- sley. Bowmanville 2 Mi 11 brook 4 Last Friday we suffered one of our infrequent losses. Carter's Win 4-3 In Playoff Game Playoff round robin play began Tuesday, March 14 for Carter's Bakery Novice hockey team as they met the always tough Jimmy's Hornets. Hornets. Playing really well as a team, the Bakers took an early 2-0 lead in the first three minutes on a pair of goals by Paul Drummond with an assist going to Jeff Carter. These two goals got both coaches attention as Carters started to think a rout was in store, just what we were hoping for. However, coach Ball had different thoughts as the Hornets pulled together together and started to play their tough defensive type of game. The play went end to end with Jimmy's finally tallying tallying the next goal. The score remained 2-1 for the longest time until Jeff Carter put one in the Hornet's net.
