Formed under the auspices auspices of the Town of Newcastle, Community Care and the Durham Region Community Care Association, the program program runs with the help of volunteers. Gail Spence, administrator administrator with CIVP, said volunteers volunteers are matched with someone on a one-to-one basis basis or in a group situation with the intent of helping them overcome their depres- . sion. People, 16 years of age or older, involved in the program program can refer themselves into it or be referred by professionals professionals in the community, public health, Victorian Order Order of Nurses or the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital. Mrs. Spence said the goal of the service is for the volunteer volunteer to help people who are having a stressful time ;n their lives set goals they are capable of attaining. . Mrs. Spence said the goals could include learning basic life skills (for the person person recently released from an institution), socialization, budgeting, nutrition or how to seek employment. The volunteers arc trained to help in these types of situations. They are intensively screened ana undergo undergo an extensive 10-week training course. « . "The course the volunteers volunteers take really gives an insight insight into the types of mental mental illness," Mrs. Spence continued. Ada Veonstra, a volunteer volunteer with the program, said she applied what she learned through the courses she took but didn't see a lot of progress with her clients immediately. Mrs. Spence remarked that "changes come slowly" in those suffering through mental illnesses. The program, however, is successful. Mrs. Spence said often the volunteers keep in touch with their client after they have been discharged from the program. Mrs. Veenstra added that quite often those that have been helped by CIVP want to help other people overcome overcome tneir depression by be- ■ coming a volunteer. "In the process they are helping themselves," she said. Right now there are seven seven volunteer matches in a "one to one" situation. Four volunteers are trained but arc unavailable and four referrals referrals are awaiting matches. matches. When a volunteer decides to become involved with CIVP he or she is asked to make a six month commitment commitment to the program and spend 10 hours a month with a client. Mrs. Veenstra is involved in a "one to one" situation with a client and participates participates in the group aspect of the program. She spends roughly five hours a week volunteering. In the group situation she tries teaching lifeskills to those involved. Often many of them have recently been in an institution and she says, in many cases they just need a friend. She tenches them grooming, grooming, shopping and helps them plan social events for themselves to attend. "There is a lot of interacting interacting going on," she says, adding adding that she tries to get them to talk about themselves. themselves. According to Mrs. Veenstra, Veenstra, quite often the people in the group situation have had someone else talk for them while institutionalized. institutionalized. This gives them an opportunity opportunity to talk for and about themselves. She said she is building a friendship with the people in the group and with her client, making them feel they can trust her. Mrs. Spence mentioned that all cases in the CIVP program are periodically reviewed reviewed so that both the volunteer volunteer and the client know how the case is progressing. The next 10 week training training course for CIVP volunteers volunteers begins April 4 at Faith Place in Oshawa. The CIVP also holds in formation sessions on a topic of interest for the general public. The next one will be about medications and their side effects on April 26.
