V The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc. April 26,1989 Dynamic Speaker Addresses Rotary Club Central School Highlights Frank Finley (left) brought his exuberance and wide-ranging knowledge to last Thursday's Bowmanville Rotary Club meeting. The Atomic Energy of Canada public public affairs officer also spoke to students at several area schools over three days, as arranged by Rotarian Bob Sheridan. 'a., by Chris Clark by Not only is nuclear power safe and beneficial in a multitude multitude of ways, but Canada has the best nuclear power program in the world, bar none. So says Frank Finley, public affairs officer for Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. Waving a uranium-rich rock above his head, Mr. Finley told Bowmanville Ro- tarians last week that "radiation "radiation is good. If it's bad, we made it bad. It can cure ills, and feed the hungry." The 32-year Chalk River veteran was in Bowmanville last week, speaking with hundreds of students at area schools. He managed to squeeze in a visit to the Rotary Rotary Club on Thursday. "Canada," he said, "was the first country to restore a contaminated reactor. Dr. Harold Johns, of, Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan, designed the first cancer cancer treating machine. Canada Canada is good at what it does, and we're damn proud of it." He said that when he sees people proclaiming themselves to be anti-nukes, he asks them to clarify their opposition. He often finds that they are unaware of the tremendous medical breakthroughs breakthroughs which radiation has fostered. Nor are they aware of the potential of irradiated irradiated food to fight world hunger, salmonella, and botulism. botulism. "Of course, there's a bad side and a good side," he admitted, admitted, adding that over half of the radiation we receive receive each year is from natural natural sources and "that's just the way it is." Pilots flying from Toronto to Europe on a regular basis receive more radiation in one year than a worker at the Darlington Generating Station will in a lifetime. Furthermore, some the world's most naturally radioactive radioactive regions have the lowest lowest cancer rates among their people. Mr. Finley touched briefly briefly on the Chernobyl nuclear accident and assured the S oup gathered at the Flying utchman Hotel that the same thing could not happen happen at one of Canada's CAN- DU reactors. "They are the safest reactors in the world." The accident in the Soviet Soviet Union was the result of human error and incompetence incompetence along with the failure "A--<vTt* 8t l seVJ' ce A\ of graphite in critical components components .of the system, he reported. reported. The Soviets recently announced that they would stop using graphite material in their reactors. Mr. Finley also had a good word for tritium, the valuable and high radioactive radioactive by-product of the nuclear nuclear fission reaction. Darlington Darlington is equipped with a facility which will remove tritium from heavy water. The removal station is scheduled to reopen later this year following continuing continuing technical problems. "The Americans aren't counting on our tritium for their weapons," he insisted. "Tritium cân be used for good, health-related purposes." purposes." He mentioned exit signs which glow in the dark in the event of a power blackout blackout as one example of the ways in which tritium can be used. • The trucks and trains which transport tritium are crash tested extensively, according according to Mr. Finley. Beneath the statistics and examples, his underlying underlying message was that Canada Canada should be proud of its nuclear nuclear technology and accomplishments. "It's not bad for a nation of hockey pucks and Hudson Bay blankets," blankets," he joked.
