Orono Choir Party Thirty members and their spouses enjoyed an evening Wednesday, May 24 at the charming home of Mr. and Mrs. Hooper. A Horticulture Tribute A well-known horticulturist horticulturist passed away April 30/89 in Oshawa hospital, Mrs. Thomas (Penny) Fairbrother. Fairbrother. She will be long remembered remembered for her love and dedication dedication to horticulture, particularly to the young folks in our areas, and in general to youth throughout province. She received the" Silver Trillium Award from O.H.A. in 1968 for work in youth groups. Penny organized our Orono Orono Jrs. Gardiners in 1960 and with the excellent support support of Bowmanville Kiwa- nis Club, who provided judges, judges, trophies and financial support, our Orono club became became recognized throughout the province. The best tribute to Penny's Penny's teachings, are the original original members of her club are still in horticulture - related professions. Penny would be proud of Miss Carol Bamett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Derek Bamett, who now holds, a Phd. degree from Cornell university, nursery specialist. Janice Caldwell, daughter of Mr. and. Heritage Week '89 Saturday May 27th dawned Sunny but cold, cold, and the early birds hungry for a breakfast of pancakes, sausages and coffee coffee donned their heavy sweaters! Good attendance for the excellent breakfast and Toots Barraball had a good sale of "goodie bags" for $1.00. The merchants had various various items for their sidewalk sales and artists Merle Slute, Alice Cobbledick, Jim Richards had interesting art shows. Needless to say, the sidewalk cafés were not too busy and people referred eating inside. Inside the town hall, the atmosphere was at least warm and most cheerful! The displays were varied and first on list - 1 Helen Schmid had a good "Thru The Years"in pictures pictures 2. Donald Armstrong has a classic collection of hockey and baseball cards. 3. Heidi Lycett (Schmid) has a good show of oldies but goodies in dolls, toys etc. One eye catcher a doll (sailor (sailor from World War I) 4. A gallery of interested spectators viewing Velma Armstrong's local scenes and faces, on screen. 5. Now a display and collection collection "after my own heart" - Eva Duvall's Carnival glass collection plus some depression. Glass makers from such Companies - Fenton, Fenton, Imperial Northwoods etc. and some really excellent excellent pieces. P.S. - Carnival collecting, one of my hobbies! 6. Mabel Goode brought her lovely Cocoa Pots and these sure are attractive. 7. Eileen Stephens brought very lovable old dolls and also large display of "old cans." 8. The local Dept, of Natural Natural Resources displayed a pictorial story of life at our local forestry station mainly from eras 1907 -1954. 9. A real eye-catcher - The very pretty Sampler in cross- stitch from St. ' Saviour's Saviour's A.C.W. Also from same source, very recent pictures of "stars" from their play and dinner theatre. The cos tumes were gorgeous and such famous players as Reverend Hall, Chas Gray, Charlie Hester, John Caldwell, Caldwell, Steve Johnson, Gale Esler, just to name a few. 10. Upon town hall stage, the quilters club ladies were busy with needles and thread, finishing off a lovely quilt. Some of ladies quilting - Councillor Diane Hamre, Stella Carson, Doris Wan- nan, Donna Scott. 11. Now for the male interests interests - Jr. West presented a large collection of "Tools and Bells.' showing his deft fingers busy with chair caning. 13. Blame Moffat was busy demonstrating basket weaving. 14. Those "hub- bies"coming home late, better better not meet up with Judi Chad, as her collection was of a large number of rolling pins, (large and small). This is of course a partial list of the displays, but all are certainly interesting and certainly a large portion of our "heritage."
