The games were preceded by a business meeting of all members at which the new President, Frank Parise, presided. He was supported by Oscar Wollstein, Vice-President; Margaret Parise, Secretary; Wanda Hall, Treasurer (who reviewed the Club's very satisfactory satisfactory financial position); Doris Wollstein, Tournament Tournament Secretary; and Lloyd Woods, Greens Chairman. In previous years there have been separate meetings meetings of the two clubs, men's and women's, but in 1988 the two clubs followed the example of the parent provincial provincial organizations and merged. All members were delighted delighted with the improvements improvements to clubhouse and grounds made possible by the hard work of a few devoted devoted bowlers and the generous generous grant from the federal Department of Health and Welfare under the New Horizons Horizons program. The clubhouse clubhouse has been fully insulated insulated and new electrical heating installed so that.it may be used for social events during the winter months. New plumbing has also been provided and the kitchen modernized. Outside, new lightweight "bowlpushers" have been obtained obtained as well as a new sprinkler system and a handsome wire fence. A new mower and a verticutter (to remove "thatch") have been provided to facilitate the excellent excellent work already done on the greens under the direction direction of Lloyd Woods who, among his other skills, is the capable Treasurer of Ontario Ontario Lawn Bowls. Still to be v completed is landscaping in the northeast corner of the property where a brick patio will provide much needed space for our associate members and friends to enjoy watching the stirring contests we expect expect will be features of our six tournaments later in the season. Advance notice and results of these will be given in The Statesman in due course by the writer who is happy to take up his pen once more after spending several happy summers in his native England. It is a matter of sincere regret to him, and to all other bowlers in our Club and District, that Morgan Lunney is no longer with us to delight us in the writer's periodic absences absences with his inimitable stories of our activities. On Thursday, June 8, the Club is sponsoring a special evening in support of The War Amputations of Canada's Canada's Child Amputee (Champ) Program. All entry fees for the usual two-game jitney will be given to this deserving organization. The officers and members of the Club wish to acknowledge acknowledge with grateful thanks the co-operation of the Town of Newcastle in all our efforts efforts to provide better facilities facilities for our citizens, the generosity generosity of a donation made by Mr. Rick Bates, and the continuing support of Mr. John M. James, Editor- Publisher, The Canadian Statesman, in permitting us to record our' activities and to illustrate them with his excellent photographs.
