She said the camp is one of three camps for diabetic children sponsored by the Canadian Diabetes Association Association (a national volunteer association that leads the way in research, education and services for diabetics). It runs for two-week sessions sessions throughout the summer summer under the guidance of counsellors and medical staff from the Hospital for Sick Children. There are one-and-a-half adult supervisors for every child attending (85 children. and youths attend each session). session). Mrs. Todd, herself a diabetic, diabetic, said at the end of two weeks people attending the camp, including herself, have better knowledge of the disease than when they first arrived. The benefits people reap from attending Camp Huronda Huronda are many. Each child, she states, has a different way of life and has a different way of dealing with the disease. This means that what each individual camper gets out of attending the camp also varies. Some of the campers may be from small towns and may never have met another E erson of any age with dia- etes. They will see that they aren't alone and may learn more about dealing, with the condition from seeing seeing how other young people manage. The camp also gives the children a chance to realize that they can deal with their diabetes on their own, she said, without Mom and Dad's help. She stresses that the major major priority of the camp is to have fun, but the children attending "do have a very serious, chronic condition 'Æm mM that they have to deal with on a day-to-day basis." Medical supervisors ensure ensure that children have their blood monitored daily and that their food intake is balanced with their physical activity. With that in mind, Mrs. Todd tells parents who may be a little guilt-sticken over sending their child away for two weeks, to view the time apart as a break from the daily routine of blood tests and needles. The camp, she added, "Is the first invaluable step for the parents in letting go."
