The group, which included included eleven members of the Bowmanville W.I., eight members from the Hampton Branch; their husbands and other friends of the Institute, Institute, visited the chapel on June 15th. At the historic building we were met by a guide who told us that the Mohawk Chapel was the first protestant protestant church in Ontario, and possibly the first church of any denomination built in the province. The first permanent permanent white settlers ap- g eared in the area known as rantford in 1805.. The timbers for. the church were cut in Paris and floated down the Grand River. River. The lumber was hand- sawn and the nails were hand-drawn. The original chapel bell, which is now displayed beside the building, building, was cast in London, England. It became the first bell in Canada. However, the chapel also shows evidence of more recent recent history. The red carpet in the centre aisle was used in 1939 by King George and Queen. Elizabeth during their visit to Brantford. The gold carpet in one sanctuary was in Westminister Abbey during the crowning of Queen Elizabeth. The Coat of Arms, one of the finest in Canada, was presented by George III and carved out of one piece of wood. Behind the cross is a famous famous Iroquois symbol called the Pine Tree of Pence. This beadwork was done by the Caughnawnga Indians nearly nearly two hundred years ago and was donated to tne chapel by a lineal descendant descendant of Capt. J. Brant. Over tne altar are the Apostles' Creed, the Ten Co- Town Takes Action at Intersection Queen St.-- Liberty St. Drivers may soon find the parking problems at the intersection intersection of Liberty St. and Queen St. solved. Audrey Rogers addressed members of Newcastle Council Monday night asking asking for their assistance in rectifying the problem at the intersection. She told councillors that when someone is attempting to turn onto Liberty Street from Queen, the driver's view is obstructed by parked vehicles on Liberty St. Councillor Larry Hannah has been having discussions with representatives from Durham Region to see what could be done to correct the problem at the intersection. Members of council decided decided that Councillor Hannah should take Mrs. Rogers' comments with him during those discussions. The Town of Newcastle's Director. of Public Works will be looking into the matter as well. mandments and the Lord's Prayer in the Mohawk language. language. A bronze plaque is in mommy of the splendid service service of the chaplain of the chapel and a unique honor roll bears the lengthy list of former students of the Mohawk Mohawk Institute who served in the First World War. The recently-installed stained glass windows are the gifts of generous donors and are given in recognition of the role of the Six Nations in the history of our country. These eight windows deal with the following subjects: Founding of the Five Nations Nations by Hiawatha and Od- gnnawidah; The journey of representatives of the Five Nations to Queen Anne's Court in 1760; American Revolution; arrival in Upper Canada; consecration or the chapel; education through the Mohawk Institute; tne Queen; and Christ, the "Lord of the nations. This window portraying "Christ, the Lord of All Nations" Nations" is the gift of the Women's Women's Institutes of Brant County in 1959. The Queen Anne Silver is also contained in the chapel as is the Queen Anne Bible which contains this reference reference on the front cover: "For Her Majesty's Church of the Mohawks -1712". In addition to the visit-to the chapel, the group also enjoyed a number of other attractions. Our day began when we left Bowmanville on "The Fun Bus", arriving at Caledonia where our first stop was the Big Creek Boat Farm. Arriving there around lunch time, we boarded the Grand River Belle, a 50- passenger riverboat. The captain of the Grand River Belle told us that as a result of the loyalty loyalty of the Six Nations to the British Crown, the Indians were given compensation when they were forced to leave their former hunting grounds through the Haldi- mand Treaty (1784). Joseph Brant secured, ns compensation compensation for losses incurred, six miles of land on either side of the Grand River, from the source to the mouth. This block of property amounted to 768,000 acres. During our tour, we also saw Pauline Johnson's home. The famous Indian poet was born in Chiefwood and died at Vancouver. Her body was cremated and the ashes placed in Stanley Park. Having finished the boat cruise, we proceeded to the theatre where we enjoyed a live show. Following the entertainment, entertainment, we boarded the bus and then drove to the Mohawk chapel for the final leg of our visit.
