Dear John: John Deere Answers Your Lawn and Garden Woes t Banish (Lawn) Baldness Dear John: I've been reading about new "miracle products" that reduce hair loss on humans ...is there anything I can do about bald spots on my lawn? Dear Lush Lawn Lover: Spring is a good time to fill in those scalped patches with new grass seed. Get to the root of the problem problem by planting seed when grass growth is aggressive and weed growth is slow. Once the weather gets warmer, weeds grow rapidly and can create a hairy situation for newly planted lawns. For a full, lush lawn, plant grass seed according to geographical geographical region. ' Cool-climate grasses do best when started in early spring or late summer; the best time to plant warm-climate grasses is spring. You'll see fuzzy growth on the lawn's bald spots eventually, eventually, although it may seem to take quite a while. Patience is rewarded. Dear John: I've had enough of the drab gray days of winter. What flowers do you recommend recommend for a garden full of color? Dear Rainbow Ray: Three of the most popular bulbs for color ' are gladiolas, dahlias and begonias, begonias, These plants are not only beautiful to look at and easy to • care for, they come in a range of colors that let you custom . design your flower garden. For example, you can create big splashes of color or neat rows of flowers in the same color family. family. TUlips, a perennial favorite, offer a rainbow of colors to be added wherever you like. Hyacinths Hyacinths add not only beautiful color but also fragrance to your garden. Dear John: My neighbor said my lawn problems may be due to poor soil. How do I have my soil tested, and what If it falls? Dear Soilsport: A soil test is the first step in preparing a new lawn. The test will tell you the amount of nutrients and soil acidity so you'll know what to add to grow a healthy lawq. Many private laboratories will test soil samples for a nominal fee. To prepare a sample, collect soil from different areas of your garden, including high and low spots, trouble spots and areas with obvious soil differences, Dig a v-shaped hole 6 to 7 inches deep and remove a Mt-inch slice from the entire length. Mix the samples well, place in a clean container and label. If the turf is growing very poorly in some spots compared to others, take a separate separate sample from those areas. After the first soil test, you'll probably only need one every four to five years, because changes in fertility and soil pH occur very gradually, JOtin DEERE SALES SERVICE (416) 983-9119 (416) 623-1122 Orono Taunton Rd.
