The Youth Skills Pro- ams include the Ontario aineeship Program, High School Apprenticeships and Summer Trades Experience for students. Mr. Curling explained that the new Youth Skills Programs are part of the Ministry's over-all strategy to help develop skills, training training and work experience among young people. The new initiatives focus on skills, rather than on job creation. "These initiatives will allow allow young people to acquire the skills which are critical in today's demanding and fast-changing economy," Mr. Curling said. "The booming economy in Ontario means jobs are not hard for most young people to get. But it is often difficult for young people people to get the skills they need for rewarding careers." The new Youth Skills Programs were included in the government's recent Speech from the Throne and budget. They are added to the Skills Development Ministry's Ministry's array of youth programs. programs. High School Apprenticeships Apprenticeships for senior high school students will allow them to attend school and work as apprentices at the same time. During the school year, eligible students will take regular high school courses while they train as apprentices. The Summer Trades Experience Program, beginning beginning in 1990, will gwe employers who train apprentices apprentices a $1,000 subsidy to hire high school students for trades-related summer jobs. The Skills Development Ministry will spend up to $6.6 million on the development development of these new programs in the first year. A study recently conducted conducted by the Ministry, entitled, "Pathways" found that young people who do not attend attend university or college often often have trouble getting the skills training they need to succeed in the workplace. "These initiatives provide new skills training opportunities opportunities for young people while they are still in high school as well as after they enter the workforce," Mr. Curling said. "They also increase their awareness of skilled trades careers." Other youth programs administered by tne Ministry Ministry include: FUTURES for employment-disadvantaged young people; Environmental Environmental Youth Corps which provides provides experience and training training in environmental-related activities; Start-Up which provides interest-free loans to young entrepreneurs, and the Summer Employment Program, which offer a variety variety of work experience and training in summer jobs in government. Ontario is inviting the federal government to support support these training programs programs which are consistent with their proposals on entry-level entry-level training.
