A baby shower was held for Janine McGill on July 13th at the home of Shirley Stainton. Janine received many beautiful gifts for Baby Brock. We were very sorry to learn of the death of Fred Dayes. He was a much beloved beloved bus driver several years ago for many of the local local children at that time. He will be sadly missed. We extend extend sympathy to his wife and family. Mr. and Police Seeking Clues After Robberies Crime Stoppers and Durham Durham Regional Police are asking for the Public's help in solving three robberies which occurred in Oshawa during the evening of June 24th. - At about 1:30 p.m. a man was walking on Dean Avenue Avenue near Kitchener Street when he was approached by two youths, one of whom was walking and the other riding a bicycle. - The youths grabbed the man and demanded his money. A struggle ensued and the bandits eventually forced the victim to the ground. In the struggle, the victim's wallet containing $140 in cash was stolen. He also received a. cut on his head but fortunately he was not seriously injured. - The suspects are described described as: ■ #1) A white male, 18-20 years, about 5'5", 140 lbs, brown shaggy collar length hair. He was wearing a light ; t-shirt and blue jeans. #2) A white male, about 20 years, over 6' in height, dirty blonde hair, muscular build, wearing a grey t-shirt ! and blue jeans. A re-enactment of this robbery will be shown' on CITY TV, Channel 57, Cable 7 on Thursday, July 27th during the 6 p.m. and 10 p.m News. Another two men were robbed at the intersection of Bloor Street East and Ritson Road about 15 minutes later as they walked along the street. The same two ban- ' dits grabbed them and stole a gold chain from around the neck of one victim and a gold chain and cross from the other. Lots of Smoke But No Damage in Orchard Fire An unscheduled bonfire at Twin Brand Orchards on Concession Three and Gibson Road last week was held in check by Newcastle firefighters. A large wood I\ pile burned, sending smoke billowing into the air. However, there was no further damage. CLOCA MEETING HELD TONIGHT -- This afternoon afternoon and evening, there will be an Open House held by the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Conservation Authority on the subject of outdoor recreation recreation planning and a feasibility study. The purpose of the study is to develop an overal strategy for CLOCA's outdoor recreation services services and facilities in the Durham Region. The Open House will be in Room "A". 11/ LOG HOME BUILDING -- Durham College is offering a program this fall on the topic of log house building. The course will instruct students students from the beginning stages of log construction construction to the completion of the building. The instruction site will be on Highway 115/ 35, approximately 17 kilometres north of Highway Highway 401. In addition to the payment of a tuition fee, students must supply their own tools and gear. FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT -- For the next few weeks, The Statesman will have a correspondent correspondent in Scotland. He's Brandon Coyle, a 16-year-old member of the 1201 Orono/Newcas- tle Venturers Company. Five venturers and two advisors from Orono/Newcastle as well as a contingent of Hampton Sea Scouts will be heading to Scotland for a Scout camp called "Discovery '89." The local group will be among approximately 1,000 Scouts camping at Scone Palace, near Perth, Scotland. If all goes according according to plan, Brandon will be sending back two reports from Scotland via our fax machine. Look for them in the editions of the next two weeks. UPCOMING FAIRS--Over the next two or three months, there will be plenty of opportunity to take in a fair or two. Closest to home are our own Orono Fair (September 7 to 10) and the Blackstock Fair on August 26th. The Port Perry Fair takes place September 2 to 4 and the Peterborough Peterborough Fair is August 15 to 19th. In Lindsay, the fair dates are September 20 to 24th. CAR SHOW CANCELLED -- The Clarke Township Township Museum and Archives has announced the cancellation of its 4th Annual Antique and Classic Car Show. This event had been scheduled scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 30, between one p.m. and four p.m. The museum apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused. TOURS OF DARLINGTON -- The Darlington Nuclear Generating Station's Information Centre is open seven days a week from nine a.m. to four p.m. There are bus tours, films and presentations available at the Information Centre. DRIVE-IN GOSPEL FILMS -- Commencing on Sunday, July 30, there will be gospel films at Liberty Pentecostal Church, located at the corner of Martin Rd. and Highway Two. MORE FUN AT THE LIBRARY -- "Creatures of the Jungle" is the subject of a presentation Thursday, July 27, at the Bowanville Library. Seventeen-year-old Jeff McKay, probably the youngest reptile importer in Canada, will be bringing his collection of exotic South American American animals to the Bowmanville branch of the Newcastle Public Library between the hours of one p.m. and two p.m. This event takes place in Meeting Room 2. Some of the other upcoming programs include "Fairytale Fun" which takes place on Thursday, August 3rd and a puppet show on Tuesday, August 8th. For the August 3rd program, participants are invited to dress up as their favorite fairytale character and join the fun which commences at two p.m. in the Bowmanville branch. The August 8th puppet show will feature two stories: "The Paperbag Princess" and "The Three Billy Goats Gruff." MUSEUM HOSTS ZOO VISIT -- The Bowmanville Bowmanville Museum is planning a trip down to the Bowmanville Zoo for children aged seven to 12 next Wednesday, August 2, at one p.m. If you would like to send your children, you can register register them at the Museum up until August 1 any time between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. There will be a fee to defray the costs of admittance and refreshments. The kids' outing arranged by the museum for today, Wednesday, July 26th, consists consists of a tour of the Bowmanville Town Hall. TIS THE SEASON FOR ROAD CLOSINGS--Arthur CLOSINGS--Arthur St., in Newcastle Village, will be closed from Highway Two to Andrew St. this month and next. The closure went into effect as of July 24tli and is expected to last for six weeks. The purpose is to reconstruct Arthur St., from Highway Two to Beaver St. There's still no official word yet on whether or not the Highway Two widening between between Courtice Rd. and Bowmanville will get a green light for this year. We should be hearing more on that subject within a few weeks. OSHAWA LIBRARY GETS GRANT FOR RENOVATIONS RENOVATIONS -- A $117,500 provincial government government grant for renovations will provide Oshawa's McLaughlin Library with proper facilities facilities for the preservation of its valuable Canadiana Collection. The collection features books, maps, photographs and newspapers documenting the history of Oshawa as well as such rarities as an original 1795 edition of Samuel Hearne's "A Journey from Prince of Wales Fort in Hudson's Bay to the Northern Ocean".
