Letter to Editor Dear Sir, On Sunday, July 23 I decided decided to burn some brush on my property north of New- tonville. I guess I was not thinking because it was a little windy and I ended up starting a grass fire. I tried to control it, but it got away on me. My wife called the Village of Newcastle Fire Station #2. Within 10 minutes there were six firefighters on the scene. They had everything under control very rapidly and efficiently, and they stayed and made sure everything everything was out and nothing was left smoldering. Most of these guys are volunteers, giving up their time to help us all out. This was only a grass fire, but it could have been a house, barn, or automobile accident. accident. I would just like to say thanks to a bunch of friendly, friendly, dedicated guys who don't really get the recognition they deserve. T. Kindratink, R.R.#1, Newtonville. P.S. To the crazy nurse in emergency (Bowmanville Memorial) on Sunday, July 23 afternoon, "Thanks"- I did get my sympathy." Hobnobbing With Harvey By Harvey Malcolm On Doing a Rain Dance Not within our memory span, which admittedly is extremely short, particularly particularly involving things I wish to forget, have we had such a long spell of dry weather. According to the old limerick, limerick, couplet or whatever, the rain in Spain falls mainly mainly on the plain; here in Yel- vcrton it hasn't fallen at all. The last measureable rainfall rainfall took place on June 20th. The ground is so parched the lawns are withering up and beginning to resemble the Sahara desert. The Mama and Daddy Robins are now carrying air compressors compressors to aid them in their search for the wily earthworm earthworm which has withdrawn into its subterranean tunnels tunnels down below the frost line. The corn, which was earlier growing at a centimetre centimetre a minute has started to stagnate and is curling up like a housewife with her hair in curlers. The fields of corn have more up and downs depending on soil and moisture conditions than a yo-yo at a Tommy Smothers special. In the garden nothing much is growing but the weeds. The pigweed, which has always got a reserve on tap-(tap root that is), continues continues to grow and flourish. The round-leaf mallow with its extensive fibrous root system defies mother nature's nature's effort, and ours, to give up its place in the sun to any domestic competition. Only a few of our feathered feathered friends are in evidence. The tree swallows have departed departed elsewhere for an environment environment more conducive to providing an ample food supply, no doubt. The lowly starlings are working overtime overtime to supply the needs of their noisy half-grown brood. The bird bath appears appears to be the only oasis for our air borne residents used jointly for drinking and bathing purposes. On the more positive side the current drought " aint all bad" as the saying goes. For instance the lawnmow- ers which have been working working overtime most of the season season are finely getting a well deserved rest - a time of rejuvenation rejuvenation and repairs. Likewise, the operator of same - particularly rejuvenation! rejuvenation! Just where, how and when does one hold a rain dance? Obviously, with our four left feet we do not qualify qualify as a suitable candidate to perform the ritual. What kind of imprecations or supplications supplications are required to gain entry to the ears of the Rainmaker? On second thought perhaps perhaps we should have some of our rye-bald bachelor friends (or married ones who act the part) go into the local pub where the exotic table dancers hang out and for a small fee get one of the young ladies to perform a rain dance in their own inimitable inimitable fashion. If it still doesn't rain, so what, the time and effort wouldn't be completely wasted. Have you ever noticed that the really successful businesses advertise regularly.
