He refused to endorse any of the candidates running to succeed him as leader. And he has not decided whether to retain his seat in the House of Commons following the leadership convention at the end of November. Should he stay, a position as critic of a high profile ministry would interest the former Oshawa high school teacher. Although he did not endorse one of the relatively low-profile candidates, he predicted that the convention will unify the party. WHITBY -- A province-wide work to rule campaign by prison guards spilled into Durham last week when Whitby jail guards began backing up prisoner court appearances by as much as two hours. Represented Represented by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, guards across the province are protesting the slow pace of negotiations. The province has offered a three percent wage hike. As well, guards are among many provincial civil servants who are being required required to contribute an extra one percent into their indexed pension plan. This upsets guards, many of whom do not collect their pension, because the average average life expectancy of a prison guard is is 58 years. Whitby guards have specific grievances of their own. They say that the jail is overcrowded a third of the time. They also cite the heat of the past few weeks in a facility withoutair conditioning. Onespokesman said that the temperature had reached 105 inside the jail recently. The work to rule campaign is scheduled scheduled to continue indefinitely. - One of 11 students participating in the Work Orientation Workshops (WOW) is l Cory Brock. The grade 11 student is working 35 to 40 hours per week at Bowman- 3 ville Audio Vision and also attends a workshop on job skills once a week. Eleven area high school students are gaining a new awareness of the what it takes to be a good employee this summer thanks to Work Orientation Workshops. The program is a joint venture between the Ministry Ministry of Employment and Immigration, Immigration, the Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education, and a number of local employers. The federal government is funding the program. The Board of Education Education is awarding successful successful students with two cooperative cooperative education credits. The employers are providing on-the-job experience and training. Students in the program are involved in two different types of activities. One day a week students attend a workshop where they discuss discuss such things as communication communication skills, personal financial financial management, business functioning, workplace workplace practices, and future employment planning. The workshops take place in a room at the Canadian Legion building which the Legion has donated. They are directed by June Brown and Marlene Wheatley. June is an occasional teacher teacher at Bowmanville High School, and Marlene is the WOW supervisor. Both energetic energetic teachers visit the employers employers once a week to monitor monitor students' progress. Employers provide 30 to 40 hours of job training for the students per week. Nine of the students work in Bowmanville; two work in Oshawa. Anxious to work in a sporting goods store, Steve Harrison rides his bike to the Oshawa Centre each day to work in such a store there. Cathy Woolner was determined to learn about the life of a short-order cook. She is working in a local restaurant restaurant this summer. WOW will hold its end of summer banquet in late August, August, at which time Marlene and June will, present awards and assess the program program after its first summer. Seven-year-old Jonathan Woods was at a truck wash Saturday morning when the pit bull broke free of a chain and attacked him. People turned hoses on the dog and the boy broke free. The dog has been quarantined to determine whether it is rabid. PORT PERRY -- Although school is still a month away and students are loathe even to think about returning to their desks, work is proceeding on Port Perry's newest public school, S.-A. Cawker on Simcoe Street North.. A Board spokesman said-That the school will be ready for students on September 5, the first day of classes. There will be a few minor inconveniences which he called normal when a school first opens. The gymnasium may not be completed completed by that date, but by the time the cold weather forces gym classes indoors it will be ready, he said. The fire started at the north end of the barn near an electrical room and spread throughout the structure. A pilot flying overhead overhead first spotted the fire and radioed officials at the Oshawa airport. Firefighters were able to save a similar barn on the property which also housed 40,000 chickens.
