Ecolyzer Digestor in Testing Stages Letter Writer Wants Protection from Land Developers Tin- Canadian Statesman. Bowmanville. August 9. 1989 Youngsters and Animals Enjoy Museum Trip to Zoo Dear Editor: Re: Iratepayers Some 50 taxpayers came hurriedly to a meeting your paper alterted them to, about the proposed Cooperative Cooperative housing proposal on Jackman Road. It's not a pleasant scene when homeowners from a certain area feel themselves unprotected from the whim of developers. Moreso when our council fails to explain to its citizens that our municipal municipal government is supposed supposed to protect present tax- papers from unwanted or irrational development. It hurts all the more when one reads in the paper, that council directs a developer to go talk to the neighbors and listen to their concerns, before you come to us again with your proposal! Do we or do we not have an elected council? Here are some 50 taxpayers taxpayers wasting their time at a hastily called meeting, expressing expressing their concerns to two consultants for the de veloper, and one official from the planning department, department, while neither the actual actual developer, ifi case the "Co-op," nor the Town council council is concerned enough to be present, leaving everybody in limbo as to what to do next. No one to explain why the many letters of concern sent to the planning department department were not forwarded to the applicant, neither an explanation explanation that most of the concerns expressed therein, are normally taken care of by the many agencies employed employed by the town on behalf of us the taxpayers. In effect, Council is saying saying that ratepayers should fight it out with developers. Do ratepayers have to hire their own consultants to protect protect themselves? Or will Council now make clear that they have proper procedure in place, for the protection of present homeowners Sincerely, Dirk Brinkman. The ecolyzer digestor, shown above, is being used by 20 residents in the Town of Newcastle for a four month period to determine its effectiveness in eliminating waste. John Veldhuis, chairman of the G.O.O.D. Committee, said at the end of the project the committee hopes to be able to make a recommendation to the Region of Durham about using the digestor and the composters, which are also being studied in the project. _ . _ _ From Page One doesn't need any special treatment, such as regular rotation, to make it work. When the material begins to decompose, decompose, water is the product left over. The cone-shaped digestor is placed in a hole about a foot deep. When the water forms it then seeps into the ground through a metal screen at the bottom of the unit. The sludge left over in the digestor once the water has seeped out will be dry material much like topsoil that can be put in the garden. If for some reason the project doesn't succeed it will have been a significant significant experiment all the same. This is the first time the Region has approached approached an environmental group to assess a new environmental technolo- „ .. gy, "They (the GOOD committee) were very enthusiastic about it and have ven their support to the project," Ms ollis noted. The households in the municipality who are helping with this project will be keeping track of how much waste they put into, the digestor and any problems they'have with using it. "Hopefully we will then be : able, to make a reconimendation to the Region," Region," Mr. Veldhuis said. Alice White, one of the twenty people people making use of the digestor, said at this point she hasn't encountered any. problems with the new product. "I like it," she said, adding that it is handier than storing wastes for the composter. The G.O.O.D. committee also has 20 soil saver composters and 20 Lapin ski composting barrels for the project to help determine what the best method is for eliminating waste.
