The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, October 25,1989 23 C.S.S. Valedictorian Addresses Fellow Students I would like to welcome everyone here tonight, especially especially the Grads, and especially especially the Grads who are missing Homecoming by coming back for Commencement Commencement this weekend! Well, here we all are together again after being thrown out head first into reality and the real world. Wfiethcr we've been at university or college or out in the working world, we've all had a lot to cope with over the past month and a half and we've all changed at least a little. But what hasn't changed and what we will remember for a long time are the memories memories that we will always have from being here. Remember back to grade nine. Everything was new : a now school, new courses, new teachers, new people to get used to (sort of now most of us feel right now). We had Mrs. Deakin's freezing cold English classes which kept us wide awake, contrasting Mr. Deakin's geography mo vies in a warm, dark, quiet room. We had Mr. Outram's story-filled science classes and Mr. Parés chastic french classes. Back then we thought life and school were complicated but we learned how to handle them. Now that life seems much more complex, we can draw on our past experiences and deal with the things that life throws at us now. We've seen a lot of teachers teachers come and go from Cour- tice over the four or five years that we went here. Like Mr. Ross who stressed the importance of "silent reading" and then would go out in the hall and make so much noise that no one could do any reading! We had Mr. Quin who actually made English grammar bearable, and our own David Letterman look-alike Mr. Horvath. We've also had a lot of teachers leave the school this year- just because because we were graduating and they couldn't bear Cour- tice without us. Just to name a few: Mr. Powell, who by the way, never once remembered remembered to take any music to the Clarke Band Festivals; Festivals; Mr. Findley with his "phenomenal" Man-in- Society classes; Mrs. Ryan who always had a friendly smile for everyone; Miss Green with her incredible spirit and involvement; and last but not least Mr. Fischl with his astounding reaching reaching distance, especially while holding a metre stick, and his unique way of saying saying things for example: "It's like shoving a sock in a pop machine, gang" "scratch piece of board" or "it all comes out in the wash." However, you didn't have to retire or transfer from Courtice to get mentioned in my speech! Grade 13 was the best year in my high school career, due in part to Mr. Adair letting us watch him squander his life's savings savings at the horse races and Mr. Walkau's debut as Superman Superman in Physics class. There are many teachers who I haven't mentioned yet but let me assure you that isn't because I've forgotten them. Mrs. McCIurg always made English interesting by keeping you on your toes. She has a way of teaching things so that you never forget forget them! Mr. Minnie's Eng- S SBO * celebrate with us lish classes were just as interesting interesting but the best part Miracle Food Mart and Miracle Ultra Mart in all departments was the occasional home- 1089 qnly. I never once found a teacher who wasn't encouraging or who wouldn't spend some of their spare time to explain something to me. The others important aspect of C.S.S. is the friends vou make here. As you go through life, I believe that friends are a very im- portant thing to have and Keep. C.S.S. really is a friendly school compared to most and the people who go here, who work here and who graduate from here all reflect this feeling I hope that the friends you made ryp TtPOTllm 1 OP Dipt and the memories you have Ui AttJglUeU U1 from your high school days V at C.S.S. will remain with [ you always.
