Goodyear Eagles Cruise To Two Week-end Wins The Red Eagles captured four more points last weekend weekend with victories over Uxbridge Uxbridge away and Cobourg at home. Nick Dennis continued continued his hot pace with 8 points, close behind was Glen Campbell with six points and linemate Chris Shmyr also with six. That makes 20 points in two games for that line. The Bowmanville boys struck fast in the Bruins' den. Shmyr potted the first one from Dennis and Campbell Campbell just 35 seconds into tne game. Nine seconds later, Dennis scored from Campbell Campbell and Baumhauer. It was about then that it became the referees' game, handing out penalties fast and furious. furious. If he could not find any he made some up. Imagine coach Taylor getting penalized penalized for throwing his Lands in the air in disgust and being being ejected from the game because he was copying Don Cherry. The boys held up well, weathering several double penalties and adding two more goals. Kelly Armstrong Armstrong scored unassisted, and brother Shane rounded the scoring off for the period, from Glen Campbell Campbell and Dean Baumhauer. Early in the second the head official went on the rampage again throwing around a few unsportsmanlike unsportsmanlike penalties for the goal tender and for polite questions. questions. While the Eagles had four men in the penalty box, Uxbridge flipped the twine three times to tighten the game 4-3. Once again the Eagles rose to the occasion with goals by George Pithie from David Fairey and Shane Armstrong, and Chris Shmyr scored nis second from Nick Dennis. Scott Webster came up with some big saves in the first and was in charge on the breakaway breakaway when the game was close. The Goodyear boys came away with a 6-3 win. Cobourg Cougars made their first visit to the Eagles' nest this season, on Sunday night and were treated to a 7-2 taming. It was a close game in the first period with the Eagles having the shot edge 11-7 and scoring the only goal off the stick of John Hartford from Shmyr and Dennis. Things opened up in the second. The Goodyear crew had the edge in shots 18-7 and the scoring edge 5-1. The manager and coaches control the players but it is very interesting who the officials answer to. It appears that a referee may take the ice and call the game any way he chooses. One week ago Sunday the referee allowed the teams to play hockey but controlled the game. Several of the recent recent games saw the official assess penalties for unexplainable unexplainable infractions. At one time you can impede the progress of a player with your stick, but at another time you can't. At one time two players can grapple on the ice without swinging, and receive majors and at another time they don't receive receive a penalty. And what about protection of the goal- tenders who are at the mercy mercy of an attacking player when they are covering the puck. There certainly seems to be a lack of consistency. It must be terribly frustrating to the players and coaches, not knowing what is going to be called and what isn't. Who do the officials answer to? It is rumored that Coaches Coaches Taylor and Maclnnis will have to sell their cars and buy a van to carry their chalk boards to the new arena, arena, since the town has not equipped this beautiful new building with the necessities for hockey teams. It's been a year folks, everything should be in place by now.
