Newcastle doesn't like the proposed federal goods and services tax and elected officials have passed a resolution resolution opposing it. Members of Necastle Council agreed with Councillor Councillor Amot Wotten on Monday Monday when he suggested council should not endorse the GST. Councillor Wotten said he could see no benefits from the proposal and felt that "the whole country is upset with this." He explained that he brought the matter before council because he thought there was nothing fair in the proposal and he was "very much" against it. "I see no need for it at this time," he added. Mayor Marie Hubbard also spoke in support of the resolution, saying that the GST will have an impact on the municipality. She noted, for example, that parking lots will be taxed if the GST goes into effect. Oshawa City Council passed a similar resolution recently, stating their opposition opposition to the tax. They backed their resolution with a letter to the prime minister minister stating their views. Oshawa's resolution was endorsed by the Townships of Uxbridge and Scugog.
