Lucy enjoys a good conversation, so having her loved ones around her really made her day. Lucy is a resident of Mamwood House, Bowmanville, formerly formerly of the Long Sault Community. Long Sault Club 50 members members enjoyed lunch at the Port Hope Legion on Monday, Monday, November 27,1989. Mrs. Doris Baker and Miss Grace Smith attended Mrs. Lucy Penwarden's 94th Birthday celebration at Haydon Haydon on Sunday, November 26th. The Christmas Reunion Santa Claus still finds his way to Long Sault girls and boys. He took time lor a personal personal visit with each child as he distributed gifts at the Long Sault Community pot luck Christmas dinner on Sunday evening, December 3, 1989. The Reverend Bonnie Bonnie Kelly asked the blessing for the bounteous meal, at the invitation of Mistress of Ceremonies, Doris Baker, who is President of Long Sault Club 50. Jacqueline Vaneyk presided at the piano piano for the singing of Christmas Christmas carols. An unfortunate looking couple appeared on stage to sing "All I Want For Christmas is My Two Front Teeth", and "I'm Getting Nuttin' for Christmas, Cause I Ain't Been Nuttin' but Bad". They were accompanied accompanied by Jacqueline Vaneyk Vaneyk at the piano, and later returned when they were more recognized as Gail Ha- siuk and John Vaneyk, to Christmas Concert by the combined choirs of the Maranatha Christian Reformed Church and The First Baptist Church of Oshawa under the direction of Cory Kuipers Saturday, Dec. 16th 8:00 p.in. in the Maranatha Christian Reformed Church -Xs s i. "Communi-.- ty spirit is alive and well at the Long Sault", declared Mrs. Audrey Rosevear, a former former teacher of the one room century school at Long Sault, as she moved a vote of appreciation to the Club 50 organizers of the annual event. Mrs. Rosevear's observation observation was supported by the room full of families, several of which represented three generations, and by the fact that many newcomers newcomers to the area seemed as much at home as the visiting visiting former residents of the community. Euchre The Christmas Euchre party, sponsored by Tyrone Senior Citizens' Club will be held Friday, December 15th, at the Community Centre with extra prizes and sugar plums. There were 16 tables of euchre in play at the Community Community Centre on Friday evening, December 1, 1989, with tne following results: first Dorothy Beech, Elizabeth Elizabeth Wilkins, Len Cain, Russell Wright, Harvey Partner, Aileen Turner. There were eight tables of euchre in play at the Old Tyrone Hall on Monday, November November 27, 1989, a rather nasty, rainy night. Coining Events The Tyrone Sunday School Christmas Presentation, Presentation, the White Gift and the Mitten Tree Service will be held on December 10th at 11:15 a.m. at Tyrone Church. Sunday school children children will meet at the church at 10:45 please. The Tyrone UCW are holding their Christmas meeting at the Tyrone Church at 1:00 p.m. on December December 13, 1989. Come for dessert. All ladies welcome. Goodyear Hosts Tour of Plant for Women's Institute On November 28th, Prov- idence-Shaw's W.I. had a tour of the Goodyear plant. During the tour they learned that the plant has been in operation since 1910 and is one of six across Canada. Canada. At one time it employed 700 people but is now down to 250. They saw how the Banbury makes rubber and is sent to the Colanders where it is made the proper thickness. It is then sent to the belt room, then the presses, on to inspection and out to shipping. They were then presented with Goodyear Goodyear hats. After the tour they went to Joan Tax's home for their meeting with 22 members present. J. Buma read the minutes of the last meeting. S. Moffat gave the Treasurer's Treasurer's report. She then gave her report on the W.I. Area Convention, M. Dow gave more details on the annual Games Night. Motto-^"Rubber, what would we do without it?" was given by J. Buma. She noted that the Explorers 400 years ago discovered the natives natives in the new world playing playing with balls made from tne white liquid, found on weeping weeping trees. It wasn't until 1735 that a French Scientist, Scientist, exploring the Amazon River, took the substance and created rubber. A. Rickard requested that the Program .Coordinators give her their monthly reports reports so that she can prepare prepare her Annual Reports. M. Dow read a W.I. report from the Amherst Island Beacon newspaper. The meeting closed with Mary Stewart Collect and à social hour followed. followed. The first team the Sub boys faced was the Marsh- man Brothers from Port Hope. The Port Hope team caught the Sub team flat footed and scored the first three goals of the game. Rob Watson put the Sub boys on the score board with a nice end to end rush. A few minutes minutes later, Port Hope scored to again get their tnree goal advantage. Early in the 3rd period, Darren Donohue scored for the Sub boys with Chad Veinot and Rob getting getting the assist. Later in the 3rd period the Port Hope team picked up a penalty, allowing the Sub coaches the opportunity to go to their power play line. Twenty seconds into the penalty. Darren notched his 2nd goal with Chad and getting tl ute later. Les McCrory tied up the game with a nice individual individual rush. Rick Swale notched the 5th Sub goal on a set-up from Clayton Guest, giving the Sub team 1 a 5-4 win. The turning point in this game was when the lights went out and allowed the Sub boys time to stop and rethink out their play. Later in the day tne Sub team played against the Co- bourg Police team. Again in this game the Sub team allowed allowed the opposition to score the first three goals of the game. Late in the first period, period, the Sub boys got going with David Vernon scoring and Alex Walcer and Chad Veinot getting the assist. A minute later Rob scored on a pass from Ryan Kohn. With five seconds to go in the 1st period, Rick Swale tied up the game on a set-up from Clayton Guest and Ryan. Early in the 2nd period, Cobourg scored to give them the lead. Darren Donohue tied up the game on a pass from Darren Allin. Cobourg scored again to regain the lead. With a Cobourg player in the penalty box, Rob scored on a set-up from Alex Walcer, Chad Veinot then gave the Sub boys their first lead with Rob getting the assist. assist. Mr. Sub team playing two men short, Rob skated in on the Cobourg net to notch his 4th goal. In the dying seconds of the game Cobourg scored to make the final score 10-7 for the Subs. At 8:00 p.m. the Sub team took to the ice at Oro- no to play St Gregory's from Oshawa. The Sub boys were ■ short a goalie ana were forced to put Chad Veinot between the pipes. This was a big gamble as now the Sub team would be short both Chad and Rob on defence. The St. Gregory team notched the first two goals of the game and it looked like the Sub's were tired from a long day. Les McCrory then put the Sub boys on the board on a set-up from Rick Swale and Darren Donohue. With the game down to the last seconds and Chad on his way to the bench to get another attacker, Darren Darren Donohue tied up the game. Les and Tim picked up the assist. The boys snowed a lot of heart in this game when it would have been easy to have just quit and blamed it on a long day. On Sunday the Mr. Sub team headed back to Grafton Grafton to play the Port Hope Spitfires. This was a hard fought game with the Sub boys taking a 3-2 win. David David Vernon scored the first Sub goal with Alex Walcer and Jack Laverty getting the assist. With the Sub boys playing two men short the Spitfires tied up the Lumber from Trenton. This game had everybody on the edge as these were the two top teams in the tournament. tournament. Rob scored to put Mr. Sub on the scoreboard at the midway point of the first period. period. Less than a minute later, later, Trenton tied up the game. Darren Donohue scored a power play goal to give the Sub boys the lead, both teams had many good opportunities to score but the goalies kept the puck out until Rick Swale scored during a pile up in front of the Trenton net with Clayton Clayton and Ryan assisting. The Trenton team pulled out all stops, but Jeff Crawford Crawford stood well in the Sub net, not allowing the puck to get by him. The referees made the game real interesting when they penalized the Sub boys late in the third period al lowing Trenton to pull their go witn six on Sub boys played e to obtain a 3 goalie and four but the ! hard defence to 1 win. ' This, tournament was a thriller from the first face- off. Both Jack Bentley and Brad Vacheresse did a great job on changing the lines to keep fresh players on the ice.
