Cathy's Gold 78 King Street West Bowmanville - 623-1933 Christmas Stray Writer Recalls December of 1962 By Rebecca Bilcox Early in the fall while shopping with my mom on our Saturday outing, I had seen the most beautiful beautiful bride doll, dressed in lace and silk with bright blue eyes and brown curly hair. How I wanted that doll and I immediately immediately went home and wrote to Santa. Evexy Saturday after that, I saw her in the window of the store. My mother would always say; "It is too much money dear", and I would reply, "but I'll be very good and help you, and I have already written to Santa." Near the beginning of December I fell extremely ill with pneumonia. The weather was bitterly cold with high winds and blowing snow. The doctor managed to arrive at our home and he spent the night hoping to pull me through. During all that time, I spoke of only the bride doll, how I had been so good, and why did I have to be so sick. Time passed by and slowly I recovered. It was the week before Christmas Christmas by the time I was Television Service Co. As Miss Christmas says: "Television Service Co. must be doing things right, because most customers come back year after ycar!"„ Television Service Company PHILIPS Sales and Service 185 Church, Bowmanville Telephone 623-3883 PH UPS able to go to town again with my mother, and I remember remember so vividly that my heart broke and I be- f an to cry as the bride oil had disappeared from the store widow. I was devastated and broken broken hearted, but I thought that some other little girl would sure be happy on Christmas morning. Well there were so many other activities at Christmas time to enjoy. Our Christmas social lunch box was the next day at school. It was the girls' turn to decorate a shoe box, fill it with goodies goodies and share our lunch with a boy. What fun that was and I won the prize for the best-decorated box in the school. Our Christmas Christmas concert came that night and I began to feel alive with the mèaning of Christmas. The hope, the love, the kindness of sharing, and I thanked God for allowing me to be here, to share all of this with my family and friends. School ended, and Christmas was only two days away. We all helped out in the kitchen baking Christmas goodies. We cut our own tree and decorated decorated it. I always had the job of putting the tinsel tinsel on but I did not mind, for I would do such a beautiful job, each piece had its own place on that tree. Our Sunday School Christmas concert was that night and I playing Mary. I member holding baby Jesus Jesus in that play, I can remember remember how I believed in the true meaning of what Christmas is all about. When the Christmas carols carols started I sang my heart out. Christmas Eve was here. I pleaded with my Daddy to take me to the store window, thinking maybe there was another bride doll there. Then Santa could stop on his vyay and pick up the doll. My daddy said no, that on the way home from work he had stopped by and that there was no doll in the window. I was so sad. That night we all piled in the car, while mom stayed at home to finish some last minute chores, and we headed to town to the old fire hall. Santa was going to be there! The church bells were ringing, and the choir was singing Christmas carols outside the church. The small town was alive with Christmas lights and I felt good, I felt happy happy and I loved Christmas even if I could not have my bride doll. All four of us scurried out of the car, and I ran up to Santa and jumped up on his knee. Santa said, "Becky, I hear you were a very sick little girl, that you have been very good by helping others others and making them happy. What would make you the happiest?" I looked at Santa with a sideways glance, wonder- g how ne knew how ck I had been. So I told in: sick was can re- him how good I'd been, that I believed in Christmas Christmas about the love, the hope, and sharing with others but that there was a certain doll, a bride doll I would like to have, but that my parents did not have much money and anyways someone else had taken it from the store window. It must have been the twinkle in my daddy's eyes that Santa saw for he said that maybe somehow my wish might come true. My mommy tucked us into bed that night with our stockings hung on our bed posts and she read us all "The Night Before Christmas." I was exhausted and had no trouble falling to sleep. The next morning, I heard the Christmas carols carols playing and the smell of fresnly baked pudding and cookies. I looked at my stocking filled with oranges, apples and jellied jellied candies. Slowly I crawled out of my bed and on all fours I went to the living room. The Christmas tree was all lit up and there yes there sne was. It was my doll, wrapped in a flannel blanket, it was really her! Rebecca Bilcox 18 Rhonda Blvd. Bowmanville, Ontario L1C 3W4 My Most Memorable Christmas by Verna Hooey While we were having supper Christmas eve several years ago in Barrie, Barrie, the delivery man from a local hardware store opened the door and walked in. "Here is your doll carriage." carriage." My mother was so flustered, flustered, she took it and put it on the back porch. From that aay on I began began to question the Santa Claus story, as the doll carriage was under the tree in the morning. Colonial Tea Shop...
